Going into yesterday, we did not expect any breaking news. That's different today.
We believe there could be multiple commitments today. We'll get to those in a minute. First, the big situation we'll be watching.
Up front, we aren't expecting a commitment out of Green today. He returned from a visit to Oregon yesterday. He is expected at Mizzou late this morning. He will spend all day in Columbia and go back home some time tonight. Recruiting enters a dead period at midnight so he's got to be off campus by then (it will likely be a few hours before).
Some might be alarmed that his visit to Mizzou is shorter than the one to Oregon. No need to be. It takes 90 minutes to get to Columbia and significantly longer to get to Eugene. Also, he visited Mizzou multiple times in high school. He knows the program, he knows the players, he knows the staff. This isn't an information-gathering visit. He already has the information about Mizzou.
While it was expected, it's obviously good news that Green left Oregon without a commitment (at least so far as anyone knows). We wouldn't expect the process to stretch out too long after this trip. While Colorado and Nebraska have been mentioned as possibilities and Green could always wait and take a couple trips during the January 3-7 transfer visit window, we see Mizzou and Oregon as the main contenders here. There's a reason he planned visits to those two immediately upon entering the portal.
We'd put the mood as cautiously optimistic around Mizzou. The Tigers wanted the visit to Columbia to come after the one to Eugene. One source told me before the visits " Going to be a battle but we’re ready for war." In the interest of full transparency, I have had a handful of people tell me this is a done deal to Missouri. None of those people are directly involved with it. So it's one of two things: Either wishful thinking or it is done, but the people more directly involved aren't going to say that until it's official and announced. Just personal opinion, I'd give Mizzou the edge. Green just doesn't strike me as a kid who's going to go halfway across the country. Mizzou may not be able to beat Oregon's NIL number, but it can get close enough that playing 90 minutes from home with Armand Membou and Williams Nwaneri wins out. We'll do our best to get in touch with Cayden after the visit, but he hasn't made any comments publicly throughout this whole thing and we don't really expect that to change.
So, on to the rest of what's going on. Who would commitments be if they come today? Here's our list in order of likelihood:
He left his visit on Friday afternoon. Missouri felt good about its chances
Missouri has been on him since the start. We could see reconnecting with Blake Baker leading to a quick end to this one.
Left town on Saturday morning. Don't know of any other visits he took, but that doesn't mean he didn't take any.
Visited Mizzou and Colorado. He told us he enjoyed the Mizzou visit. Our question is whether he's a take right now, especially if the next two pan out.
He took four or five visits. We know he tripped to Virginia Tech, SMU and Louisville. Colorado is on the list, but we're not sure if he went to Boulder or not. All that seems to be left is a decision.
McClellan went to Colorado after Mizzou. But we still see Oklahoma as the big threat here. Due to the overwhelming belief he was headed to Norman when he hit the portal, we still see this as the toughest get out of the potential announcements in the coming days. Missouri made an impression. We don't know if it's enough.
On the high school front, here's where we stand:
We expect it to be Mizzou and wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement before the signing period on Wednesday. It could happen at any time.
We really don't know of any other contenders. The only way we don't see this going Mizzou's way is if the Kewan Lacy commitment gave him cold feet and he opens it back up and waits. But there's no way Burnette didn't know Missouri was pursuing Lacy (and multiple other backs) so we think at some point this week he announces a commitment to the Tigers.
It's Mizzou or Tennessee. The Tigers got the last shot. He'll leave campus some time today and could make a decision at any time this week. Not sure where this one stands right now.
We're confident it will be Mizzou, we just don't think it will be announced until January 6.
Going to try to get more info this morning before @drewking0222 and I head to KC for basketball around noon. @Sean_Williams and @JHamilton23 will be on top of trying to track down visitors and give you guys the scoop all afternoon and I'll check back in once I get to the T-Mobile Center. Expecting a busy day.
