1) Missouri kept hope alive on Saturday night with a win over Florida. The hill is still steep. Missouri still has a ways to go before I'm going to legitimately talk about the NCAA Tournament. I think they can lose six games the rest of the way and have a CHANCE to get in. That would be 10-8 in SEC play with a win at West Virginia or 11-7 in SEC play with a loss in Morgantown. It's possible, but not easy by any means. But had Missouri lost, you're now talking about a team that would have had to go 11-4 in its last 15 SEC games (with the first two on the road) and there wouldn't be any reason to believe it was even possible. I'm not ready to say it's likely by any means, but Saturday at least makes it possible.

2) I'm not going to rehash the entire game because we covered it and wrote plenty about what it meant on Saturday night and Sunday morning. But one thing I do think is worth emphasizing again.

Cuonzo Martin: “Part of it, when Jeremiah was here, guys looked for him...You look for him to post and that can make you reserved or passive. Play the game. You have to go out and play the game.”

This wasn't a question about Tilmon. Completely on his own, the coach brought up the fact that Missouri's offense is more free and maybe better without Tilmon on the floor. I don't want to say it's a shot across the bow or a message. I think Martin and Missouri would like to have Tilmon available (from talking to people, I think he'll miss another three weeks at least and I don't think it's impossible at all that we've seen him play his final game in a Mizzou uniform), but I think what that signals is that the coaching staff has reached the same point a lot of us reached at some point this year. And that is the fact that it's time to stop dreaming about what Jeremiah Tilmon might be and accept what he is. He's a solid player who's capable on certain nights of being a great player, but he is not consistent or reliable and he is not a guy you can build a team around. This team will be better if it's spreading the ball and playing free on offense than it will be by trying to force feed a touch to Tilmon on every possession. Even if he returns, the offense should far more resemble what it did against Florida than what it was with him involved.

3) Here's something that surprised me about the game on Saturday: It hurt Florida much more than it helped Missouri, at least according to KenPom. The Tigers entered the game 55th on KenPom. After the win they were 54th. Florida entered the game 23rd and is 35th as of this morning. I don't really know what that means; it's just something I thought was interesting.

4) This is a large week for Missouri. The Tigers are at Mississippi State on Tuesday night. They are at Alabama on Saturday. These two games are like virtually every game left on the schedule. They're tossups. Mississippi State is 60 at KenPom. Alabama is 53. The Tigers are projected to lose both games by three points, given a 39 and a 37% chance to win respectively. So, if they play ten times, maybe Missouri loses six in both cases, but the competition is close enough to what Missouri is that it wouldn't be surprising for Missouri to win. Nothing would be a big surprise this week. They could go 0-2, 1-1 or 2-0. Absolutely none of it would surprise me. Maybe the figured something out and are going to go score 80 points twice and win. Maybe they won't be able to throw the ball in the ocean tomorrow night and they'll lose 54-36. I have no idea. I think the goal is to split these two. I think Alabama is the tougher game because the Tide can really score. They had a 21 point lead on Florida, they took Kentucky to the wire in Rupp. But again, nothing's going to surprise me out of this week. We'll have the Synergy driven preview of tomorrow's game later today and our regular preview and prediction tomorrow morning.

5) Recruiting is about to get busy for Eli Drinkwitz. This coming weekend will be the first of three official visit weekends before the late signing day. Sean Williams posted some notes on prospects we've been able to track down over the weekend. I'm not going to go prospect by prospect. I would warn that this three-week stretch isn't very likely to blow you away in terms of star ratings. The big names just aren't out there for Missouri to get right now. It's largely going to be a class made up of under the radar guys. Either guys that Drinkwitz gets in on who other major programs might not have room for or maybe taking some commitments from Group of Five type schools. As of this morning, the class is ranked 70th. That's going to change for the better by a lot. Missouri has 12 commitments. Of the 69 schools ranked above them, only three have fewer than 15 commits. So simply by adding eight more players, Missouri is likely to make up a significant amount of ground. It will definitely be a top 50 class. I'm not sure it will get into the top 40, but it's possible. But the fact of the matter is, once you made a coaching change, you knew it wasn't going to be a class that was going to blow anyone away on paper (and realistically, it wasn't that even before the coaching change).

6) The coaching staff is finalized. Rather than run it all down here, we listed the likely responsibilities in our story when they hired Marcus Johnson on Friday. We're hoping to be able to talk to one or more of those assistants this week on the podcast or in person and we'll let you know. I can't really say whether it's a good staff, a great staff, a decent staff or a terrible one. I don't know enough about the guys. The proof will be in how they recruit and play on the field. We won't really have a good idea on that for a couple of years.

7) We're in a time where we can branch out beyond Missouri a little bit in the thoughts, so let's talk about the national title game. First, college football has to not give us 16 days between the semifinals and finals. A lot of people have kind of forgotten this game is happening because it's been so long. Honestly, there are times I've forgotten it. But it is happening and it should be a good game. That's mainly what I hope for is something that's competitive and compels me to stay awake for the whole thing.

If I had to make a pick, I'd pick LSU. I just think they're that much better than anyone else. I would have picked them against Ohio State too. I just don't think anyone is good enough to slow down that offense enough to win. Honestly, I think Ohio State is a better team than Clemson. I know Clemson won the game, but I came out of that one thinking Ohio State is better. Not that Clemson is bad. Not at all. I just think the Buckeyes are a little better. Trevor Lawrence has never lost a game as a starter. Nobody's going to feel good about picking him to lose. It will not be shocking at all if Clemson wins. But LSU is the best team in the country in my opinion. I'll go with the Coach O's 37-27. You can make your pick and get free stuff from me here.

8) Speaking of football, this is the best thing that came out of this weekend's NFL playoffs (except for maybe one game that I'm going to address in point number 9):

Marshawn is a comic genius. For those who have never seen it, watch Marshawn watching Red Panda.

9) As I often say, this is my space and I get to talk about what I want to talk about. If you don't want to spend any time reading about the Kansas City Chiefs and our Lord and Savior Patrick Mahomes, skip this one (but I am going to tie it into Mizzou at the end). I tweeted this prior to kickoff yesterday morning:

I felt that way. Even last year going into the playoffs, I didn't think the Chiefs were beating New England. Was I pissed off when they lost that game because Dee Ford didn't know where to stand? Sure. But the season wasn't a failure. This season is a failure if the Chiefs don't make the Super Bowl. I felt that way at the start of the season, I felt that way at the start of the playoffs and I feel that way now. When you host the AFC Championship Game against the worst seed in the playoffs, you're supposed to win. Period. I'm not going to say something stupid like if they don't make it this year they'll never make it, but they're supposed to make it. The season will be a failure if they lose to the Titans on Saturday.

I'll spend plenty of time talking with my friends and not boring you guys with my thoughts about Chiefs/Titans all week, but the game yesterday is what I want to talk about here. As I saw someone tweet yesterday, Freezing Cold Takes exists on Twitter for that game. I will shame no one who gave up on that game. I gave up on it. At 24-0, there's no way anybody thought they were winning. There might have been some that held out hope it wasn't over, but nobody thought they were winning. Because in six previous playoff games where a team was down 21-0 after a quarter, not one of them had ever won and they'd lost by an average of 39 points. A friend of mine texted at 24-0 and said "If this is Alex Smith you turn the game off. But because it's Mahomes, you keep watching." Not that he thought they were going to win. Not that anybody thought they were going to win. But you weren't going to turn it off because this dude has made a habit of doing things we've never seen before. And he did it again yesterday. First quarterback ever to throw for 300 and 5 touchdowns and run for 50 in a playoff game. First team ever to trail a playoff game by 20 and win it by 20.

If they awarded an MVP for divisional playoff games, obviously Mahomes would win it and he would deserve to. But two other guys should receive votes and I'm not sure who should receive more:

1) Daniel Sorensen--There are few Chiefs players I've enjoyed less over the years, but his play on the fake punt turned the tide and his play forcing the fumble on the next kickoff was the point where I actually thought the Chiefs were going to win

2) Bill O'Brien--Not going for it on fourth and a foot with an offense that had been averaging six yards per play was incredibly stupid. Running a fake punt on fourth and three from your own 40 when you were up 24-7 was even more stupid than that. As soon as the fake failed I told my wife "Calls like that get guys fired." O'Brien's probably not getting fired. I think he probably should. My friend Aaron Reiss wrote a perfect summation of the Texans day for the Athletic. If you have a subscription it's worth the read.

I told you I would tie this into Mizzou and here it is. Prior to the game yesterday I texted some of my friends saying "The next two weeks we find out if Mahomes is good enough to overcome all the ghosts of this franchise." There are probably other fanbases who have been through as much punishment as Chiefs fans. But there are two differences:

1) Either they've never been close enough to really think they were going to win something

OR

2) They've managed to win a title

The only potential exceptions are long time Cleveland Browns fans who watched their hopes die by the hand of Elway (I've got a couple friends who are Broncos fans who I texted last night and said "Is this what it was like cheering for a team with John Elway at quarterback? Because I like it") and then watched their team leave town and win. The other exception is the Atlanta Falcons who lost two Super Bowls, including one they led 28-3. But the Chiefs have been better a lot more often than the Browns and they've never even actually gotten to where the Falcons did. I think it's easy to argue it's the most tortured fanbase in the NFL if not in all of pro sports. Basically, the Chiefs are the St. Louis Blues before last year. Always good. Always in the mix. Never good enough to ever actually do it. Until they did.

So anyway, back to Mizzou. Mizzou fans think they're cursed. They can't win because of the uniform. And even though I give you shit for it, I get it. I really do. I'm a Chiefs fan and that's how I felt. I actually told people after the Titans won that the Chiefs would lose to the Texans because one of the few ways they haven't completely crushed the fanbase is by having the path to the Super Bowl laid right out in front of them and pissing down their legs. It made no sense. The Chiefs are better than the Texans. I knew that going in. But I thought the Chiefs were going to lose because the Chiefs have always lost. No matter the players in the jerseys, the Chiefs jerseys have always lost that game. And at 24-0 it reinforced every single bit of that. But then Patrick Mahomes proved what every logical person should know: Laundry doesn't win games. Players win games. And Mahomes and his teammates won that game because 27 years of gut-wrenching playoff idiocy mean nothing to them. They weren't involved in any of it. Even the only guy who is really responsible for the loss to New England last year is now in San Francisco. So it should give you hope. Missouri doesn't kick you in the teeth in big moments because it's Missouri. There isn't some hex on the program or the clothes they wear. They've lost those games because they weren't good enough. Eventually, maybe they'll be good enough. Maybe Patrick Mahomes is going to have a kid and he's going to grow up in KC and he's going to sign with Missouri in the class of 2040. And maybe he can lay to rest the idea that teams lose games because of the name on the front of the jersey rather than because of the players wearing those jerseys.

But just in case you still believe in curses and such, this guy's your hero

You think Tilmon turns pro after this year?

My 5yo is a bigger Chiefs fan than I. I started following them because he worships Mahomes and Kelce.

Yesterday his sister had a basketball game at 2pm. They had the game on in the lobby. I saw it was 21-0 and the Texans had the ball. I look over at my son and he won't even look at the TV. I know he saw the score, but he refused to let me know he knew there were getting trashed.

Went to the SLU women's game after and the boy kept a stiff upper lip. Just wanting to go home and see the game. He had his Chiefs hoody on and a stranger showed him the score. 31-24 (or whatever it was). Boy was on cloud nine. Finally got home around 5:30 and watched the game. Would have been better to see it without knowing the outcome, but at least the Chiefs won.

The first hour would have been far worse to watch not knowing the outcome. Trust me.

While the math says you definitely go for the 4th & 1, you could at least justify FG in that circumstance: any points are good when you're already up 21 and more importantly a stop there is the kind of thing that can give a team a big emotional spark.

But that same logic is what makes the fake punt absolutely inexplicable!

I'm a football fan but not much of a Chiefs' fan (even though I live in KC) or NFL fan for that matter. I did watch the Chiefs' game yesterday, though. When the Texans opted for the FG attempt on 4th and 1 at around the 10 with a 21-0 lead I told my son the Chiefs would win 42-24.* The Texans went ultra-conservative in the 1st quarter against Mahomes - you do not deserve to win if you do that. O'Brien tried to make up for it with the fake punt, but that was just insane. I can see why Texan fans complain about BOB.

Congrats to you Chiefs fans. Everything is breaking your way. Good luck.

*Edited to add: The ESPN Gamecast winning percentage thingie had the Texans at 91.3% chance of winning before that FG attempt and then at 91.2% chance of winning after making the FG.

i would like drinks staff to actually be around in 2-3 yes..one of barrys problems, imo, was the staff issues with cross etc...

Maybe we aren’t cursed but can we at least kill a goat at midfield and have a cookout just in case? I’ll bring the beer.... (before spring game of course)

If Mizzou wins 10 more basketball games they’re most likely making the tournament.

Cleveland?? Maybe I’ll give you the Atlanta blow up against the Pats. But the Buffalo Bills fans still haven’t recovered from the 90’s. Too bad Nebraska didn’t have the same luck during that stretch.

...and every attempt to do so is a big game. Important. Like those we just played. Those coming up.

Agree, I was just commenting on Gabe’s statement on if they won 10 more games it would give them a CHANCE to make the tourney. You would likely be a lock at that point.

The more important thing to look at is their Kenpom number. Make it inside the top 40 and you’re a lock. Inside the top 45 you’re probably getting in from a P6 conference.

If that game played out the way it started in first quarter and Chiefs end up losing 42-6 or something, does Andi Reid get fired today? I asked my buddy that question last night. Then we ended up wondering if Texan coach gets fired for their meltdown. Crazy game!!

you made your son go watch a women’s basketball game instead of watching his NFL team play a playoff game?

what did he do to deserve such a punishment? Why wasn’t just grounding him enough?

If I’m a Texans fan, I don’t mind the fake punt as much as I would not going for it on 4th & 1. I think he was pretty confident the chiefs were gonna score if they have to drive 90yds or 30yds. Picking up the 1st down would’ve taken the air out of the building and maybe lead to a TD drive where they possessed the ball for another 4-5 mins. Then it’s 31-7 or 27-7 with 4 minutes til half time.

Was listening to 610AM on my way home on Friday and they were playing a clip from some sports radio station in Houston where they were mocking Chiefs fans for their confidence/arrogance about this game against the Texans. In particular, they were pointing out KC's terrible home record in the playoffs... and my first thought was, "Yeah, but that was mostly pre-Mahomes". Patrick Mahomes is the dynamic that makes all of the past struggles irrelevant. It's a new day.

Now, does that mean the nut-punch can't still happen? Sure it could. Even the all-timers lost more often than they won. Joe Montana played in 11 playoffs and didn't get to the SB in 7 of them. So maybe Henry comes in here this weekend and runs for 200 yards and keeps the offense off the field. But Mahomes makes it possible for all of us Chiefs fans to stop expecting the other shoe to drop.

@GabeD I have been a Chiefs fan who is almost as old as you, but starting last season was the first time I really felt like if there is time on the clock and the Chiefs are going to win. I never felt that with Smith or Trent Green. I think people often forget that Mahomes drove the field to tie the game against New England in like 30 secs to send that game to OT last year. I have never felt that before Mahomes. When the Chiefs had the ball 24-0, I was already figuring out how they could get back in it by scoring a TD before half time and scoring on their first drive in second half to make up 14 points.

BTW, I told my buddy, a Nebraska fan that the first quarter felt like the first quarter when Mizzou played Nebraska in 2010 right after beating number 1 OU the previous week. Mizzou never came back, but that's because Gabbert is not Mahomes, no where near it.

If you can beat New England and Baltimore on the road in the playoffs, you can do the same to Kansas City.

I've never believed in curses but if you do then i think you have to feel like Mahomes is the guy to just overpower the curse; similar to what Pedro & Manny did for their deal w/the Red Sox. Sometimes you can just out-talent and outplay something like that

Love the part about Mizzou and the Chiefs. I was a HS senior in ‘69 - ‘70 became a football fan of Mizzou and the KC chiefs about ‘65. It looked so easy in the fall of 1969. Chiefs super bowl, Mizzou Orange Bowl. Buddy one year older was a freshman at Mizzou In the fall of 1969 and he had a road trip planned to the Orange Bowl. Weather got crappy and he and his crew backed out with the motto “we’ll go next year”. Lot of oranges spilled their juice on Faurot Field in vain in the many years after Jan 1970.

Regarding Tilmon, even though he’s a solid & efficient player, I think we got a glimpse of why 6’10/6’11 back to the basket guys are no longer the way to win in basketball (unless they’re a blue chipper). Give me a couple 6’8 stretch 4’s in the starting lineup or at least 3 players around 6’7 who can stretch the floor. It’s definitely not impossible to recruit that type of personnel.

@GabeD Should we read into the fact that 'Zo said "When he was here" in reference to Tilmon? Is that a slip or am I reading too much into the past tense?

After this weekend, there's no chance the Chiefs aren't going all the way. It's a lock.

9 or 10 Would give them a pretty good shot. There is so much mediocrity this year. One of those needs to be Auburn or West Va

If i have my history correct, the Red Sox were down 3-0 in the ALCS to the Yankees in '04 - came back and won and then swept the Cards in 4. They had to exorcise that demon... they did it and were unstoppable.

Was yesterday's 24-0 deficit that same thing for the Chiefs? I think it was..
