FOOTBALL RECRUITING
- East St. Louis (Ill.) OL target Miles McVay dropped his Top 12 schools on Wednesday. Not surprisingly, Missouri made the cut along with Auburn, Alabama, USC, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Illinois, Michigan State, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Oregon. The No. 56 player in the 2023 class made back-to-back weekend trips to Missouri for the Tigers' scrimmage and spring game, so while the competition appears to be tough the hometown school could very well be considered the leader here.
McVay recently told our Alabama site this in regards to a potential leader in his recruiting process, "I'd say the closest thing to a leader right now is probably Mizzou. The distance from home is the biggest factor. My mom will be able to come to the games and who wouldn't want to be a home-town hero?"
- West Bloomfield (Mich.) offensive lineman Amir Herring placed Missouri among his Top 8 schools earlier this week. He broke down each program with Rivals.com national analyst Clint Cosgrove HERE. Herring visited Missouri earlier this spring, where he talked highly of head coach Eli Drinkwitz and offensive line coach Marcus Johnson. Herring also has a West Bloomfield connection on the roster with Javon Foster, who has told Herring a lot of his experience as a Tiger.
- Missouri recently hosted another priority target in Kankakee (Ill.) defensive back Jyaire Hill, who stopped by Columbia for a visit last Friday. We weren't able to get a hold of Hill, so it's hard to get a read on his impressions of Missouri post-visit. He does have ties to the school as his uncle, James Kinney, played linebacker for the Tigers from 2000-03. Missouri could very well be in the mix, but Illinois is the team that appears to have made the strongest impression at this point. The Illini were the first to offer Hill and he's been on their campus on three separate occasions. Hill has also visited with Michigan and Cincinnati at this point as well.
- Missouri continues to branch out their quarterback target board with a couple of recent offers to Zane Flores and Gabarri Johnson. So, what does that mean for the more familiar QB targets that have been tied to Mizzou?
Our Iowa State recently caught up with JJ Kohl, who said he has a visit planned to Wisconsin and then will make a couple of return trips to Iowa State before making his decision in a couple of weeks. All signs are pointing towards the Cyclones here.
Auburn recently offered Brock Glenn, who previously mentioned Miss. State, Oklahoma State, and Missouri were the three schools that were sticking out. However, the Auburn offer made a strong impression on the Memphis native, who has a ton of family ties to Auburn - his grandfather, uncle, and cousin all graduated there. So now, it appears to be a four-team race.
- Our Iowa State site recently caught up with North Kansas City (Mo.) defensive tackle Edric Hill, who said he's in the process of setting up official visits. The Cyclones will get one of them while Hill stated he's also considering Alabama, Oregon, Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri. He's looking to make a decision before his senior season begins. Hill was recently back at Missouri in March for a spring practice.
- Missouri hosted 2024 in-state OL Andrew Sprague out of Rockhurst (Mo.) on Wednesday, the four-star prospect picked up an offer from the Tigers during his time on campus. We caught up with the Rivals250 prospect afterwards, who was excited about his latest offer since he grew up a Missouri fan and considers them a dream school. He said the staff is going to make him a high-priority for next year's class, so he's one to keep an eye on moving forward.
-The first recruiting evaluation period of the year, during which coaches can watch prospects perform in person, starts today and runs through the rest of May. The Missouri staff isn't going to hit the road until Monday with this weekend being Easter, but expect to see the coaches on the road constantly across the next six weeks or so. That usually results in a wave of new offers, as well. We're told that the first week of the evaluation period will be devoted almost entirely to making the rounds within the state of Missouri and surrounding areas. Eli Drinkwitz continues to make it a point to prioritize keeping local kids home.
Speaking of in-state prospects, you all have probably noticed that we've been paying some local targets visits lately, as well. We'll have some more stories from those interviews in the coming days and weeks. The biggest news is that Cayden Green, the top-30 prospect out of Lee's Summit North who has long been one of the highest priorities for Mizzou in the '23 class, will take his five official visits this summer and plans to announce a commitment shortly thereafter. He'll visit Missouri at some point in June. The feeling on Green has long been that it's going to come down to Missouri and Oklahoma. The Tigers have a few things going for them — namely the fact that Armand Membou is on the roster and Green said he hears from Drinkwitz and offensive line coach Marcus Johnsonmore than any other staff — but he has already taken one visit to Oklahoma this spring and plans to take another one for the Sooners' spring game on April 23. Interpret that how you will. We still think Mizzou is at least in it until the end.
