NEW STORY THE CHAMBER: JANUARY 26TH 2024

Burns is exactly the kind of guy you take a chance on. Already has great shot-blocking ability and having a 7-2 guy that can step out and hit 3s is huge.
I think Burns is fine as a development kid. But in this environment, go let guys like him do it at a mid major. You can’t take these fringe guys anymore with the portal. That’s the problem. Things have changed from when he’d be a no brainer take

I don't really think so. Look at programs like Arizona. You can get transfers, recruit high-level high school players and also take the occasional shot on a flyer with really high upside all at the same time.
Jv Brown was a walk on, I’m pretty sure he’s talking about Kaleb Brown.
Kaleb Brown is also a walk-on.

I don’t think Tommy Lloyd’s system is really a good measuring stick considering his strategy and insane success at recruiting foreign kids

That's fine, but he's not the only one. By your logic, Zach Edey isn't a kid you would've given a scholarship to or Trevon Brazile. Adama Sanogo is another one who was a fringe top-100 kid.

If you're doing what Cuonzo did and taking 2-3 flyers a class, then yeah that's a huge problem. But taking one doesn't move the needle, especially with the ability to funnel a kid out if he's not developing.

And learn how to dribble
He’s athletic and long enough he doesn’t need to, tbh. A spot shooter with his explosiveness is a nightmare just running the baseline, hit an occasional corner 3 and make a back door cut for a dunk - the latter of which he’s been much better at doing this season.

It's gonna be interesting how they keep all these guys happy and be competitive next year. 8 underclassmen all can't play and chances are they gonna end up developing someone for some other team. Burns and Barrett probably would have been guys to let go somewhere else and grab them when they hit the portal.

Marquette is program I would like to see us try to emulate, as 7 of their top 8 players are HS recruits. Focus on building the core of your team through top 100 HS recruits and supplement with transfers. Here's a list of their top players this year with their 247 ranks:

Oso Ighodaro - #81
Tyler Kolek - Transfer
Kam Jones - #91
David Joplin - #84
Stevie Mitchell - #115
Ben Gold - #198
Chase Ross - #135
Sean Jones - #155

I think we're trying to build a program in a similar way and frankly that's why I'm bullish on our future. It will take a couple years but Gates is recruiting more talent at the HS level and I think that will continue with the 2025. We can't ignore transfers, as that's a key part of the current landscape, but those can supplement the core group you're building the program around.

Yes I’m sure if you took away their scholarships they’d be thrilled to transfer to your school in a few years when they’re having success somewhere else.

I don’t care. You either get it done or don’t. Gates got bad players. It’s on him. If Drink hires a DC who sucks, it will be on him.
You don't know that. Tonje hasn't played and Grill was just getting started....and doing a pretty good job till injured.

jsmh

On the basketball side, recruiting won't really pick back up until the portal opens. It opens on Monday, March 18 and stays open until May 1.
...knew the deadline but I was just fixin' to look up the onset date. Funny how that is.

I meant they should have never taken them in the 1st place. If you are taking a high school kid you had better be sure he can at least contribute something immediately.

Why? There’s guys across the country who are really good players right now as juniors and seniors that didn’t play much as freshmen.

You make it sound like we can just pick any player we want in the portal?

If you have a relationship with someone you've got a lot better chance. An example would be someone like Dallas Thomas. They didn't have room for him but they brought him in for a visit anyway knowing down the line he could be an option.

I was thinking the same thing. To be a tournament team next year, just hit on all these low percentage scenarios.

That isn't a knock on Gates. It's a difficult situation, realistically a two year build.

i swear if i have to watch another year of jesus carralero we are going to have so many problems
I can't believe he started yesterday at South Carolina. He should only see spot minutes at best. Dude is a liability on the court.
