FOOTBALL RECRUITING
- We've got three different categories at the top here: Commitments, pending commitments and possible commitments. So let's run down each of those real quickly.
Commitment: Missouri grabbed Jacksonville State transfer DJ Coleman on Thursday. Coleman is graduating from JSU today and will be on campus at Mizzou for the summer session. He is a grad transfer. He should immediately be in the rotation at defensive end.
Pending commitment: Eli Drinkwitz sent out a 2023 bat signal on Wednesday. We expect that to finally be publicized this afternoon. We don't like spoiling announcements, so we won't do that but considering it's been 48 hours and we've dropped enough hints you should be able to figure it out. If you haven't figured it out, a new FutureCast was put in just before writing this which may or may not be related, but probably is.
Possible commitment: Missouri hosted Baylor transfer QB Gerry Bohanon on a visit from Sunday through Tuesday. Our information indicates that he is taking a trip to South Florida this weekend, though we don't know the exact days for that visit. We've also had Cincinnati and Louisville mentioned as potential destinations. Missouri's summer session begins on Monday, June 6. Check-in date for football players will likely be sometime the weekend before. So Bohanon has four weeks before he'd really need to make a decision. It could certainly happen sooner, but there's not necessarily a rush.
It's a good sign that Missouri got the first visit and was obviously in contact with Bohanon very quickly after he entered the portal (or at least a good sign for those that want Missouri to get him). Our indications were that the visit went very well, but those are almost always the indications if we're being honest. With transfers, it's impossible to know what they're prioritizing when making a decision unless they tell us and Bohanon hasn't returned our messages.
The real question becomes, what if Missouri doesn't get Bohanon? We got some indication earlier in the week that the Tigers had some level of interest in Florida transfer Emory Jones, though they preferred Bohanon. Jones committed to Arizona State on Thursday.
The other name that's been floated to us as having some Missouri interest is Mississippi State transfer Jack Abraham. Abraham has had quite a journey and will be playing his seventh season of college football in 2022. He redshirted at Louisiana Tech in 2016, then went to junior college for a year to boost his stock. He threw for nearly 3000 yards and 23 touchdowns at Northwest Mississippi CC, which earned him a scholarship at Southern Miss. In three years at Southern Miss, he completed 69.3% of his passes for a little more than 7.000 yards, 41 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He transferred to Mississippi State for the 2021 season, but did not play while recovering from post-concussion syndrome. He received a medical waiver to play a seventh season and entered the transfer portal in January.
Abraham visited Ole Miss in March where he would clearly be a backup because the Rebels landed USC transfer Jaxson Dart. We've also heard Arkansas State has been in heavy pursuit. We can't say for sure what Missouri's level of interest is, other than we were told by a person we trust Mizzou is at least checking in on him.
Again, Bohanon is clearly the priority. The question is if they miss on Bohanon, is Missouri finally at the point where it's done looking at portal options and will just go with the guys on campus? Bohanon is being recruited to be a starter. Abraham, in our opinion, would be more of a guy who's brought in to compete for the job. He could end up being the starter, but it would seem to be less of a sure thing than with Bohanon, a guy who has already started and succeeded at a Power Five program. We don't have a timetable on a decision from Bohanon, but we wouldn't expect anything to develop until that decision is made.
Some other notes:
- Missouri recently extended an offer to Houston Baptist DL transfer Kyler Braugh, who recently committed to Minnesota. From everything we've been told, Braugh seems very solid with Minnesota and is expected to sign with the Gophers despite recent offers from Missouri and Washington.
- Missouri has been extending a plethora of new offers in recent days, one to perhaps keep an eye on is Lancaster (Tex.) running back Kyson Brown. The Tigers are his first SEC offer and he told us that he'd like to visit during the summer, so we'll see if that happens. Very interesting story on Brown and the reason he is flying a bit under the radar right now, something we wrote about earlier this week HERE.
While there is new interest in Brown, that doesn't deter the fact that CBC (Mo.) product Jeremiyah Love still appears to be at the top of the Tigers' board at the running back spot but it's also likely Missouri could take two in this year's class. With Love, he recently said he's wide open with his recruiting process as he's added a ton of new offers throughout the spring and now he's looking to be committed by the middle or end of his football season. We do know he'll head to Oregon this summer with his friend and teammate Jeremiah McClellan.
- Speaking of Oregon, Raytown (Mo.) OL target Logan Reichert has already set up an official visit with the Ducks that is scheduled for June 18th after coming off an unofficial to Eugene. The four-star recently put out a Top 8 that included Oregon, Missouri, LSU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Michigan, and Tennessee. Along with Missouri, Reichert has also taken spring visits to LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
- Lee's Summit (Mo.) WR target Joshua Manning picked up a significant offer on Wednesday from Notre Dame. Will be curious to see where the Irish will end up fitting in his recruiting process going forward. For now, the four-star talent has summer officials scheduled with Missouri and Iowa State.
- Missouri was the second offer for Mt. Carmel (Ill.) 2024 running back Darrion Dupree, who recently took home running back MVP honors at the Rivals Camp Series in Indianapolis. The Tigers have seemed to make a good early impression with Dupree, who is planning to visit CoMo in June.
