Let's say Gates isn't the coach. Your source said he thought they would have the coach hired by Sunday night correct? Was Gates the coach he was talking about or was it someone else?
I'd say it's fair that any coach in the Horizon, and particularly one at Cleveland St., would desire a P5 job and pursue one to the best of their ability. There's no shame in that. Beyond that, I suspect the things attributed to Gates and the Big East teams were morel likely a ploy by his agent than Gates communicating that stuff.@GabeD
As you noted that you were told that Gates wants the LSU job, have you received any information that ANY of the candidates for Missouri’s job WANTS the Missouri job?
Also, as this search has been extremely “quiet”, and as it appears that this silence through the search process is something that Missouri really values and desires, do you believe that, if this was a leak from the Gates side, that may be a red flag for the Missouri folks in some way?
What I am getting at is that you have noted previously, something to the effect … “someone from Missouri could talk to me but they might not have a job if/after they did” (obviously paraphrasing). If this is the case and they asked whoever the favored candidate is to maintain this silence but the candidate still leaked information, would the leak coming from the candidate’s side be a problem for Missouri or something that may disqualify them for the job?
General comments …
Gates seems as qualified as Kim and I much prefer him to McMahon. However, if it is true that he WANTS the LSU job and wanted the Florida job and tried to get a Big East job last year but overplayed his hand with that AD causing that interest to wane, then it appears he wants A job, ANY job. It also appears that he is prepared to do whatever to get A job. The Missouri job may just be the “next one up”. This isn’t ideal.
The leak from his side, given his flirtation with Big East job and how that allegedly went down last year, seems like it may not be out of line with his MO.
I’d prefer a guy that sees the Missouri job as THE job and a job that he WANTS, just as it seems that Gates may WANT the LSU job. It seems there may be a candidate like this that is at least on par with Gates (in terms of qualifications).
I know its a joke but you dont want DRF at the F4 without a coach. Thats how Alden found Haith.Gabe this coaching search shit is better entertainment than Missouri basketball has been in 8 years. I hope it never ends
He went to Missouri. That’s it. Gates is objectively the better candidate. What does KE have that Gates doesn’t have? Or hasn’t done better? I don’t understand the want versus outrage between the two.
Shades of Suitcase Mike Anderson. Gates seems like he'd be shopping for a bigger gig annually. The guy is already trying to leverage us for another job before he even gets here.
No rational person would hire someone who did this.
No he’s not.He went to Missouri. That’s it. Gates is objectively the better candidate.

It's funny how you subjectively state your opinion as objective facts.and there’s no way you can say Gates is objectively better.
Much more respected recruiter according to who? The posters on this board? No he’s not.
At best it’s a push, but KE is a more respected recruiter and has head coach experience at a much better program in a much better conference.
Throw in the fact that he’s an alum and he very likely wants to be here, and there’s no way you can say Gates is objectively better.

I hope so….I could see Gates' camp leaking a statement, especially if he's interested in LSU or using leverage. It happened about an hour after they lost last night.
Industry sources, coaches.Much more respected recruiter according to who? The posters on this board?
Every coach doesn’t play the game like that though.Welcome to major college basketball, boss.
Remember. Many posters twist stuff to fit their agenda with little to no facts. And always talk in absolutes. 😂Much more respected recruiter according to who? The posters on this board?
Listen our RECENT history with “true sons” with lno HC experience at the D1 level is ATROCIOUS. KE after 1yr of HC experience was NEVER going to happen and for gd reason. No he’s not.

Please cite some of the industry soures/coaches comparisons of Gates' vs. English's recruting prowess. I'd love to read them.Industry sources, coaches.
There are always contract issues and wording the lawyers have to work through.
But just the objective ones you mentioned, please. Please cite some of the industry soures/coaches comparisons of Gates' vs. English's recruting prowess. I'd love to read them.
And if that’s the thought process that went into this decision it is terrifying.Listen our RECENT history with “true sons” with lno HC experience at the D1 level is ATROCIOUS. KE after 1yr of HC experience was NEVER going to happen and for gd reason.
I dont care. Just win baby.Shades of Suitcase Mike Anderson. Gates seems like he'd be shopping for a bigger gig annually.
Can we all agree to stop bringing up Coach Of The Year awards as criteria? It's a dumb award given out mostly to a coach who exceeded the media's expectations; far from an MVP.
What does KE have that Gates doesn’t have?
Every coach doesn’t play the game like that though.
If what Gabe is hypothesizing is true, we will know all we need to about DRF. I'll gain a ton of respect if she tells the bozo to take a hike.
Who did you have on your list of "realistic" candidates for this job? This search certainly has allowed a lot of posters to go full retard on this board. You sound like a seven year old who isn't getting his way and taking his ball and going home. I'm really interested in all the non-stiffs you think MU could hire this cycle. All the candidates suck..at least the ones that are "speculated" as being candidates. And if accurate, they prove that Mizzou's admin has ZERO interest in being real contenders on the national stage. If Mizzou hires ANY of these stiffs, I'm done with Mizzou basketball. This is a joke.
The timing of Pete’s report is interesting as Mun Choi was on a dfw to cou flight last night that landed at 10:45 PM. No idea why flying commercial but my friend confirmed it was him.
And it’s very possible Anderson probably has a record over .500 here going into year three…. There’s no reason to dog a guy who has a jock that our guy can’t carry yet 😂🤷🏻♂️Not trying to be argumentative, but the BOC stepped all over Sterk and we ended up with Drink rather than a blah hire in Anderson.
Time will tell if Drink wins enough, but recruiting has created hope and excitement for Mizzou.
Just don’t see Gates generating any excitement for Mizzou fans. Extremely blah hire for a fanbase that needed a reason to come back.
Recent elite recruiting experience at peer programs to MizzouUMKC's coach Billy Donlon was Horizon COY
Road wins against power conference teams. Commits who had P5 offers.

What does KE have that Gates doesn’t have?
Sure some do, but your implication that basically the suitcase Mike strategy is normal and we just have to accept it is not correct. Coaches may selectively do it but not almost every year, and certainly not before they’re even hired. The vast majority of their agents do, though. The only ones that don’t are elite jobs where there isn’t really anywhere else to go. Everyone on this board wanted Dana Altman, who is known for having his name vaguely attached to every decent high-major over the past few years. If Drink starts having success on the field here, he will do the exact same thing to either a) get a better job or b) get more money from Mizzou. It’s the way of the world.
That was my whole point. Very similar, so why such love for one and hate for the other?Relationships in and around Columbia with donors who can facilitate big NIL deals, knowledge of the community, more than likely a better way to relate to young players, etc. I'd actually position it as what does Gates have that Kimmie doesn't?
They are much more similar than not.
