First of all, I'm excited to get updates from PM on who will skip their redshirt season hopefully tomorrow. I'm really excited about this freshman class and our JUCO transfers. I've followed Drew since he started High School and have always been a big fan so expect some Drew love here.
Drew has had the type of experiences in FB and BB that college coaches look for. In FB, Drew won at the highest high school level, played well in All-Star games and competed in the Elite 11 successfully. In BB, he again competed at the highest high school level and the highest club level on a national stage. In watching Drew in the past, no stage is too big for him.
I know that the level of competition is different (bigger, faster, all great athletes, stronger, etc.) at the college level and the defensive schemes are more complex to read. Drew is highly intelligent and a student of the game. I believe that he will be as mentally prepared as any of our quarterbacks. He just has not had the opportunity to show it on game day versus someone other than his Tiger teammates.
He has all the leadership traits needed to lead at any level. His personality draws his teammates to like and trust him. He's an outstanding worker/practice player. He will be the face of Mizzou Football at some time.
I believe he can be successful now but I'm not on the staff so my opinion is not important. The staff has to evaluate five good quarterbacks. The will decide who will lead our Tigers this season and will stick with that decision unless he (Maty in my opinion will be that guy) gets hurt or just fails to perform. I know that Drew, like the other QB's, will prepare as if he is the starter. He will be mentally ready in case his name is called.
I would not be surprised to see Drew redshirt. Coach Pinkel will make the best decision for the team. I know there are many opinions that think Drew will leave early for the NFL. That may well be. I can also see Drew being really successful and still choosing to stay, depending on our Tigers opportunity to do the unthinkable, win a national title. If the staff feels that this year is our team's best opportunity to win at a national level and they feel Drew gives the Tigers the best chance to get there, then I can see them working Drew in. Only our coaching staff has a real understanding of what the make-up of this year's team is and what the next couple of years will bring. They may feel the core talent of a national contender will be better in a couple years.
No matter what happens this season, I'm glad Drew is a Tiger and look forward to seeing him at the Zou! Preseasons like this are so much more fun than the late 80's and 90's! We owe Pinkel and his staff so much for bringing us along so we are in national discussions again. Go Mizzou!
