What gives?

My nephew who is a freshman at De Smet was talking about a kid in his class playing varsity football at TE and already 6'5 225. Anyway, the kid is Ridge Janes, son of Ron Janes. And he wears #34 like dad! Might be a kid worth paying attention to. I don't know why he would know this, but apparently his hand measures 10 3/8. As a kid, I remember being amazed by Janes at fullback, just an absolute beast.

Edited to add that it looks like he has a daughter who is a freshman on the Northern Iowa basketball team and went undefeated in her high school career at Incarnate Word. Some strong genetics in these kids!

I may have missed the discussion, but what is the scoop on lack of snaps for this ballyhoo'd recruit? Injury? Just not ready? Too much talent on DL to burn a redshirt?

FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Missouri extended a few new offers in the 2025 class over the last few days, here is a breakdown below.

Bryon Baldwin, DB, Indiana commit - The 4-star talent has been committed to Indiana since April and while the Hoosiers are off to a hot start Baldwin is looking around. He's coming off an official visit to Colorado. Virginia Tech, Penn State, and UCLA have all recently offered as well. Baldwin told us that he's interested in Missouri, so we'll see if anything materializes down the road.

Zack Harden, S, Minnesota commit - With recent rumors of current safety commit Dyllon Williams possibly flipping to Kentucky, the Tigers recently extended an offer to Harden. The three-star from Georgia has been committed to Minnesota since March and has a couple of former high school teammates on the Gophers' roster. Despite that, Harden did recently take a visit to Auburn so he's open to looking around.

Seven Cloud (all-name team), DT, Butler (Kan.) C.C. - A fast-rising JUCO defensive tackle that was committed to Georgia in the 2023 recruiting class, but never made it to campus. He's putting together a strong season and has picked up a few notable offers throughout the month of September that include Georgia, Auburn, Miss. State, Boise State, Liberty, Texas State, Western Kentucky, UNLV, and others.

- We also posted an update on Rivals250 OL Andrew Babalola on Wednesday. While he still remains uncommitted, the timeline for a decision will be before his regular season ends in mid-to-late October. He still has a final five that includes Missouri, Stanford, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Auburn - all the schools he took officials with. Babalola said he doesn't plan to take any gameday visits until he is committed somewhere. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz was in attendance for Babalola's first game of the season recently.

ICYMI, we caught up with a couple of key 2026 targets that visited Missouri last weekend for their double-overtime win against Vanderbilt.

4-STAR NOAH BEST TALKS RETURN VISIT
4-STAR WR BRAYDEN ROBINSON IMPRESSED WITH MIZZOU

- Five-star OL Jackson Cantwell was also back at Missouri this past weekend. The Tigers are the second gameday visit for Cantwell, who has already visited Nebraska and has plans to also hit up Georgia and Alabama in October and LSU in November.

- There were brief questions when Lee's Summit North DL Ka'Mori Moore decommitted from Oklahoma this week. The natural curiosity was whether Mizzou would be interested. The answer at this point is, not really. Missouri has long been aware of Moore. If an offer was coming, it likely would already have come. The belief is he'll follow Jamar Mozee to Nebraska. As always, things can change, but Mizzou's fine with that happening.

- ICYMI last night, we caught up with 2025 QB commit Matt Zollers for an injury update. All things considered, the news sounds like it's about as good as it could possibly be for Zollers. The injury shouldn't change anything about his college career or his readiness for his true freshman year. We don't expect him to seriously compete for the starting job, but that's not because he got hurt. The likelihood that was going to happen regardless was remote.

- Mizzou's staff was on the road yesterday and tonight. We know Eli Drinkwitz is planning to be in St. Louis and Jacob Peeler is headed to Ironton OH to see Shaun Terry play. The rest of the staff is out seeing various players across the country and most of them will return home some time on Saturday to get a little family time in before getting back to the grind on Sunday to prepare for Texas A&M.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING

There are no visitors on campus this weekend. The staff has been all over the country and has been hosting kids for most of September, but this is a break on the visit calendar for Mizzou. Here's where things stand with the 2025 guys:

- Davion Hannah was supposed to visit Michigan State this weekend, but he's not going. In fact, our intel is that he's only taking one more of his scheduled visits. He was at Ohio State last weekend and is planning to visit Cincinnati in two weeks. His father is from Ohio and there's a connection to the Cincy staff. Neither of these schools is considered a big threat for Hannah. Missouri's main competition is Alabama and honestly, we don't really think the competition is that close. At this point in time, based on what we're hearing, it will be a surprise if Hannah isn't a Missouri Tiger. But, of course, until they go public, it doesn't matter and can change.

- Everyone expects Nicholas Randall to be the third member of this class. But it's been expected for a while and it hasn't officially happened. The recruitment of Randall has been silent because from everything we've heard, it's nearly a foregone conclusion he's going to Mizzou. But again, there's been no announcement. As long as Missouri has space, Randall can afford to wait, but that time frame isn't endless.

- Along those lines, the Tigers offered Link Academy forward Amare Bynum recently. A source told us that Bynum wants to stay relatively close to home and he actually reached out to Mizzou with interest. He's visited Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and Iowa State. Obviously it's a regional recruitment, not a national one. That's a list you'd give Mizzou a good shot to win. It will be interesting to see how hard the Tigers push and whether that's a signal to Randall to make a decision or a legitimate push to take Randall.

- 2026 big man Keiner Asprilla was on campus last week for an official visit. We're doing our best to get in touch with him. We have gotten quick responses, but haven't yet been able to get an interview with Asprilla. We will keep trying.

Reached out to Zollers tonight to see what the situation was with his injury and recovery. Here's his reply:

"It’s been going good I’m in a great mental state and just ready to get straight to rehab as soon as I can. The injury won’t affect me at all for this next offseason and season. I ended up breaking my fibula.

"I was very pleased with how everything went. Surgery went as planned."

1. Nate Noel is the new bell cow.

I don’t think anyone would say Cody Schrader was the most talented Mizzou player last year, but he was the most effective. He finished third in the FBS in rushing with a Mizzou single-season rushing record of 1,627 yards to go with 14 touchdowns.

However, Luther Burden was the team’s most talented player last year and he’s the most talented player this year, but maybe Missouri needs to follow last year’s formula.

Mizzou was running to pass. Schrader helped open up the pass. Through the first four games of the season, Mizzou has been passing more, and it’s easy to see why. It has a deep receiving room with plenty of weapons, but the run game is the answer. Particularly, Nate Noel.

Noel was named the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after racking up 24 carries for a career-high 199 yards.

You may be wondering, how is Mizzou not exploring the run enough when Noel has 46 rushes over the last two weeks?

The answer is he should have closer to 60 attempts. He’s been Mizzou’s most consistent offensive player this season. He’s the one who got the offense going versus Boston College and Vanderbilt when the passing wasn't making anything happen early on.

He's fifth in the nation in all-purpose yards with 475. Noel can do it all.

This doesn’t mean the Tigers should go away from the passing game completely, but Mizzou should let the run open up the pass. Plus, it may help get the offensive line in a rhythm.

The offensive line can run block. That’s not a problem, but pass blocking has been a major issue. Let them wear down the opposing defensive line so when it’s time to pass protect the group is facing a defensive line that’s more worn out.

It's not just Noel who has been a bright spot. Marcus Carroll has performed well this season, too. On the season, he has 35 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

He had his worst game of the year in Week 4, rushing the ball five times for 10 yards and a touchdown, but outside of that, he's been good.

Noel, Carroll and Jamal Roberts have combined for 623 yards and six rushing touchdowns while quarterback Brady Cook has just passed for 946 yards and four touchdowns.

Missouri should continue to feed the running backs, particularly Noel, more as the passing game finds its rhythm.

2. Brady Cook is the starting quarterback, as he should be.

I won't forget after the Buffalo game, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz talked about how some people on X told him to start Drew Pyne over Cook. He kind of laughed it off when he said that and wasn't considering it honestly. But it seems like more fans want Cook to be replaced. Not most of the fan base, but more than there were a couple of weeks ago after Buffalo, and certainly more fans than there were before the season.

For those who don't know, Pyne is 16-of-17 for 117 yards in spot duty. He also went 10-2 with Notre Dame as the starter a couple of years ago.

Cook didn't have a great game versus Vandy. Something was off for sure. He looked slow when he scrambled and on designed runs. He was hesitant with his reads and some of his throws were off-target. I asked him after the game did the field conditions have anything to do with his performance.

To paraphrase what he said, he said yes and no. The field was a little slick and because it was raining the ball was a little harder to throw but then he finished his thoughts by saying there weren't any excuses.

I appreciate the honesty. First, there aren't any excuses. It's football and they play outside. However, sometimes weather impacts the game. Do I think he's telling the entire truth? Maybe. Again, he seemed a little slow in the run game. It looked like the field was more than just slick for him. The team won't tell us if something is wrong with him physically probably. I mean, go back to the 2022 season when he played with a torn labrum for more than 95% of the snaps that season. It wasn't revealed that he had a torn labrum until after the season.

Also, he's still 4-0 this year and 15-2 in his last 17 starts. He's still completing 68.7% of his passes for 236.5 passing yards per game with four touchdowns and one interception this season.

In Week 3, versus Boston College, he helped lead the drive to seal the game. Last week in overtime, on the first play, he hit Burden for a 25-yard touchdown. He's made plays before and he will probably continue to make them. However, if you believe or hope Pyne will start over a healthy Cook, it won't happen and it shouldn't happen.

A second successful Mountain West raid will mean the Mountain West will likely need to restock with FCS callups and UTEP/New Mexico State from C-USA. They are already in a position where they need to add, with 7 full members in the future before any further Pac-12 activity. There are some obvious candidates in FCS but are any of them interested?

Season ticket holder who can’t attend the games this year offering them up here. Cincinnati and Denver games are already sold but all other games available. Seats are in section 113, row 36, seats 13&14 right by the tunnel where the Chiefs come out each game. Also under the overhang so there’s protection from the elements during less than ideal weather. Athletic directors are expected to begin discussion about a range of topics that they have mostly, so far, kept within their individual leagues. Those topics include the House settlement case, a new third-party (not NCAA) enforcement model, the future of the College Football Playoff format and — most noteworthy of them all — a regular-season and postseason scheduling arrangement.

It's cute when Charlie Baker stands in front of a camera, but in 2024 this is where the important stuff gets talked about by important people at the top of college sports. A big announcement is unlikely, but it's worth paying careful attention to what Commissioners Sankey and Petitti are willing to say.

Mun Choi delivered the 2024 State of the University address today, some of the highlights:
- Talked about the #4 best value ranking among flagship schools in USNWR, #10 ranking by Time Magazine for preparing future leaders
- Student retention rate at an all-time high (93%), six-year grad rate (75%) is best in the state of Missouri, 95% placement rate (job or grad school within 6 months) is among national leaders
- Already received 33k applications for AY25-26, up 43% from AY24-25 at the same time
- Research Expenditures $485mm, up from $237mm in FY14. 11th consecutive year of growth
- Support from MoLeg at an all-time high $505mm
- 1.6 million patients/year receive radioisotopes created at MURR
- 20MW NextGen MURR will greatly increase isotope production

As I write this I’m sitting in the waiting room of a lab in a major KC hospital. As I am want to do, I’m wearing a Mizzou shirt sitting quietly in the corner.
Out of the door comes some guy who was about 115 years old, looks over at me and says… Mizzou ay, well I went to KU, and proceeds to berate me and several others about how we we’re cowards for leaving the big 12 and how there football program will be light years ahead of ours and they can’t wait to .. etc etc..,
Now several things came to mind as a retort, but he was 179 years old. … So I just said we’re doing quite well without them, smiled and went back to reading..
My point is that the generational delusions of these people runs deep..wow.
