FOOTBALL DRINK'S TUESDAY PRESSER ENTERING WEEK 11 AT TENNESSEE

Drink congratulates both basketball teams for starting the season 1-0.

Drink encourages people to vote today.

He said Hendon Hooker is playing at a Heisman level. He said that Jalin Wyatt may be the best WR in the country.

He said their offensive line commits problems and that the Vols run a dynamic scheme.

Defensively, they're fast and experienced. A lot of juniors and seniors on that defense. A LOT.

He said they are excited about going on the road.

He said he got a response from the SEC about the penalties last game and he said since it won't change the result he won't discuss it.

He said Vols use all of the field to create one on one matchups and that they have great straight-line speed. He said its a challenging scheme with challenging players. He said the scheme is at its best with a dynamic QB.

He said that there's not much to change as far as playing on the road they just have to keep improving. He said this game will be the most challenging road game they've had. He said they have to limit false start penalties.

He said the motivation for this game is to rebound from last week. Not last season's game (because this is a different team than last season).

He said there's a whole list of things he learned from last year's game that he will apply this week.

He said there were a lot of issues on third down last week vs. UK. He said design, execution and protection. He hopes its fixable and that everyone attacks it. He said it starts with the design which is him.

Drink said that he's focused on this game and opportunity, but said that if the opportunity presents itself to play Sam Horn he'd do that. But he thinks Cook played well enough to play well in the 4th quarter to have a lead. He doesn't excuse how poorly he played earlier in the game but he said Cook gives MIZ the best chance to win.

He said that there were protection issues and route issues last week vs. UK. It's not all on Cook Drink said.

Drink said there will be changes along the offensive line due to injury. He said they're in a unique spot having He doesn't know how long RG EJ Ndoma-Ogar will be out but he anticipates this week and then they will re-evaluate.

He didn't challenge the drop punt that punter Jack Stonehouse tried to run for the first and then the 3rd and 1 play that UK got rewarded a first down for. He said he told officials he wanted to challenge those plays but officials told him they don't have an angle, so he'd waste a challenge.

He said Hendon Hooker has developed well as a passer and uses his athleticism to make plays. He said DEF has to do a good job of tackling him.

He said there is NO chance Hyrin White returns this season.

He said Vols WR Jalin Hyatt is an explosive player and that his route running, catching, and speed makes him a great player.

Drink said that they will explore in practice giving more RBs reps and carries. He said they have to know what to do, how to protect, and play without the ball in their hands. He said they have to get more out of the run game whether its blocking or getting more yards.

He wants to see how Nate Peat and Eli Young do in practice but he said that last week was the first time that he felt they played Cody Schrader too much.

FOOTBALL Question for Gabe

@GabeD In your Ten Thoughts yesterday, you mentioned that 14 times over the past 32 years did a new coach have a worse record over his first three years than his predecessor did over his last three, and then went on to build a successful program.

When doing that research, do you recall how many times a new coach had a worse record and did NOT go on to succeed? At first blush, 14 times in 32 years sounds like a small number, but if it was 14 times out of, say, 17, it would say a lot more than 14 times out of 50, for example.

Thank you in advance.

BASKETBALL CLOSING THOUGHTS FROM MIZZOU'S 97-91 WIN OVER SOUTHERN INDIANA

*We were never going to learn a ton from this game. The best thing that can be said is that they didn't take your hope and stomp on it like they were trying to put out a fire. They won the game. Nothing else really matters honestly. If you think you can draw conclusions from what you saw tonight, well, okay I guess.

*I don't know if I've ever seen a team shoot like USI did in the second half. I bet if you took their players in pregame warmups shooting against no defense they wouldn't make 14 threes in 17 tries. Dennis Gates said after the game he'd be shocked if you see another box score like that from a half this season. In all of college basketball. Missouri's defense probably gets some blame for that. But, again, you could just not play defense and they're probably not shooting 83% from three. Especially after shooting 7% in the first half. Tip your cap to them. Well done.

*Kobe Brown did Kobe Brown things. He had a double-double in the first half and ended with 20 points and 14 rebounds. But the better part was that five other Tigers scored in double figures and two more had at least eight. That's a lot of balance. I think this is going to be a team that has six or seven different guys lead it in scoring at times.

*Aidan Shaw is more ready to help than I thought. He'll still get shoved around by some big guys, but he scored nine points and hit a three and he is going to play significant minutes for this team.

*After watching all 33 games last year, Nick Honor and Sean East look like the second coming of Magic Johnson at point guard. I mean, being better than last year's point guards is a bar so low a snail might be able to clear it without much effort, but still. Both got in foul trouble in the first half, but then settled down. East ended up with 12 points and 5 assists, Honor with 10 and 5. They also had as many steals as turnovers (3).

*D'Moi Hodge strikes me as a guy that may not lead this team in any single statistical category (although I'd bet he does in three-point shooting), but he's just always around the ball making things happen. I think he's going to be a player fans really like.

*Dre Gholston was my preseason pick as the guy who was going to play a lot more and be a lot better than most people thought he would. I haven't seen anything to change my mind. 11 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 0 turnovers is good for me.

*Most of the angst tonight seems to be that Isiaih Mosley didn't play a lot. There are going to be nights like that. I didn't think he was very good when he was out there. I'm sure he was probably pressing wanting to put on a show in his first game in his home town. He'll be fine. I don't really understand the desire to talk more about guys that don't play much than guys that do, but it's definitely a thing that happens a lot.

*All the talk is that this is a better shooting team than we've seen through two games. I believe them. I'm sure it is. But it will be good to see it in a game at some point. Through Friday's exhibition and tonight they're only 12-46 and that's not going to get it done at all. Again, I'm confident it will improve, but we have to see it to be certain.

*My column is on the front page, Drew is working on his notebook right now and will have more stuff from the game tomorrow. The Tigers host Penn on Friday night and we'll both be back here then.

Offensive Coord hire

imo.. drink should hire an OC..not because of the woebegone offense (part of it)… but, i think, he cant manage the whole game AND run the offense. Some guys can, but as a young coach i dont think he can…hence the missed replay demands on sots etc…calling the offense is a process throughout the game. You cant be thinking of that/talking on the headsets about it and manage the game while defense is out there. Again some can…but thats a lot to ask…and watching him its clear he cant at this point. Hiring an OC doesnt change his impact on the offense it just frees up his game day to manage the whole game…just my two cents

also, even if we win on the bad snap…does that change anything? the offense was putrid, the kicking game was not good…and the defense was good but not good enough…

FOOTBALL Refs

You knew the refs were going to have a rough game when they clearly missed Kentucky having 12 men on the field in the first quarter on the original field goal miss by Mevis.

It was clear and Stoops yelling at a player to get off the field made it clearer. Yet they were oblivious and had to go to replay, when it looked like they had no interest, to make the correct call.
