Unmet Expectations

I have to admit, old habits die hard, and I am getting a bit of entertainment from Jayhawker fan reactions. They went into the season with hopes of a Big 12 title and CFP spot. They are 1-3, with three consecutive losses in games they led going into the 4th quarter, including the game this last weekend in which they went up on West Virginia by 11 with 5:39 left.

There is a lot of belly-aching about Brady here. There, Jalon Daniels was Athlon's preseason all-conference QB. He is completing only 56% of his passes and with 7 picks against 4 TD throws.

FOOTBALL Drink’s late game gaffe was ALMOST as bad as the one in the first half.

Once again, at nearly the same spot on the field. He called a time out and had us lineup to try to draw Vandy offside. That almost NEVER works anymore. But if he wanted to try it, fine but don’t waste a precious timeout. If Vandy doesn’t jump, just take the damn 5 yard delay if game and punt it anyway.
With 3 TOs instead of 2, we might have forced Vandy to punt, leaving us decent field position and perhaps a. Hence at a winning FG in regulation.
Coaches just don’t value TOs as much as they should, especially in the second half.

Dierre Hall (Oregon commit)

I don’t have very solid intel on this one… but hey, this is a Mizzou message board…

Heard tonight we are still in constant contact with him. Somebody from Althoff (his high school) told me he thinks it will be down to Mizzou and Oregon…

He wants to take his girlfriend with him wherever he goes (terrible decision). That makes me think he will be listening….

Again, a flip is a long way off, but we are still in his ear and will be to the end.

And after watching him play Belleville East last week…. He is LEGIT…. He’s gonna be star wherever he goes. Unbelievable quickness.

Laird Veatch got his start under Mr. Killjoy, Mike Alden, who censored the Antlers, started his own Scout troop called the “Zou Crew” and sanitized the Border War by changing the name to the Border Showdown. Desirae Reed-Francois on the other hand was the cool mom who “gladly” paid the fine for tearing down the goal posts after the 63 yard game winner against k-State, upgraded the concessions while lowering prices at the same time, and embraced Mr. Brightside like he was her own son. Who will Laird Veatch be?

Just gave a stranger a hearty MIZ!

I just left the Hucks convenience store where I went to pick up a delicious godfather's pizza. As I was leaving, a homeless methamphetamine connoisseur was entering the building. He had three teeth, an American flag bandanna on his head and was wearing a Mizzou polo. I gave him a hearty MIZ! to which he responded “what's up.” That's the first time that's ever happened to me.

The Season is Over ..

For those of you who think that, you have paid zero attention to our history of good seasons. This wasn’t a good game, and there are definitely things to work on. But one game doesn’t define a season in any way, no matter how bad it was. Especially when you sneak out with a W.

Here are some examples:

2010
San Diego State 27-24 Win
It took a 68 yard catch by TJ Moe with 51 seconds left
Final Record: 10-3

2014
Indiana (4-8) 31-27 Loss
Final Record: 11-3

2023
Middle Tennessee State 23-19 Win
Memphis 34-27 Win
Final Record: 11-2

Are we going to get things fixed and start clicking. I have absolutely no idea, though I believe that we will. But I promise that people were saying exactly the same things after each of the games listed above.

I’m not here to tell anyone not to panic. But the point is that every game is different, especially early in the season. And having a bad game early is common. It doesn’t mean things can’t or won’t get fixed.

Pixie dust for Mizzou

Last night I was just as unhappy with Mizzou's performance as probably anyone else on here (and agreed with every one of Gabe's points); this morning I decided luck may finally be on Mizzou's side and I am going to just sit back and enjoy the ride until its over. Mizzou fans have frequently had to watch as some weird or freakish thing snatched victory from the Tigers. Examples historically are the 5th down game and the Nebraska kicked football game; more recently a phantom PI cost Mizzou against KY and in another KY loss a blocked punt turned bad that eventually led to a rule change, and not long ago a fumble while crossing the goal line cost the Tigers a sure win against Auburn. Now look at the last year and 1/3. A 61 yard field goal to win the game against KSU, a successful 4th and 17 to win against FL, and now a gimme missed FG to win against Vandy. Let's face it in the past it was always the other team that got the luck to win the game. Finally the luck genie has turned Mizzou's way. They may be a fraud, they may lose against T A&M, etc., but for now they are 4-0 and probably still will be ranked in the Top 10. How often does that happen? I say just enjoy the ride until they prove otherwise.

33-41, 395 yards passing and 4td's

The 2023 Vandy game Brady Cook is the guy I thought would be leading our offense this year. I allowed myself to believe this all off season. I told myself there is no way this offense could be stopped because it just had too many weapons. That the extra year with Kirby and with the confidence that Brady Cook gained from the 4th and 17 and him finding a way to get us a W in the Cotton Bowl we were gonna take that next step. I realize it's early. But color me very concerned now. We looked close to breaking out against BC, we looked light years away against Vandy. #MIZ

FOOTBALL Brady Cook in the Tribune

He gets it and feels exactly how he should.

Cant say hes not a leader or doesn't understand his responsibilities.

FOOTBALL Roughing the Passer penalty vs. Mizzou on the QB scrambling outside the pocket…

As far as our defensive guy knew…the QB was attempting to run.

It was not a dirty or flagrant hit…simply an attempted tackle a millisecond before the QB attempted a pass.

Anybody else notice this call (late in the game) and have flashbacks to the bogus roughing-the-punter call two years ago vs. Kentucky?

I can’t believe that call was correct…can anybody explain?

Every voicemail we received during and after the game

As requested, here they are. Be warned, I have not screened any of these and am not responsible for them

Vandy's Defensive Gameplan

As talented as Burden is with the ball in his hands, his impact as a decoy can't be understated. At one point last year, Drink lauded his selflessness. And while I can't call myself a true "knower of ball," I think anyone with two eyes could see that the fake pitch to Luther-Brady dive play is the reason Brady has so many rushing touchdowns.

That being said, I think instead of the "you're going to have to beat us without Luther" defense we've seen so many times, Vandy went with the opposite - "if you're going to beat us with the pass, Luther will have to beat us." It's why most of the LBs stayed home in the middle of the field (taking away our biggest passing threat) and the safeties just played center field. You couple that with the OLine's overall below-average pass protection and--credit Gabe with this take--Kirby's insistence to "fix" the passing game while in game, you saw the offense we saw.

It's also why that first play in OT was so open. Credit Brady for looking off the safeties--if you notice everyone sold to the right side and the safety responsible for the Luther double was caught flat footed. It was an absolute dime and probably the best passing play of the season.

I'm trying real hard to focus on the positive, but I don't think the offense is as far off as it felt on Saturday.

FOOTBALL Cover 3 Podcast (rightfully) harsh on Mizzou

These guys are the best in the business, so I respect what they say. Few notes:

- Mizzou looks stuck in the mud, offense looks like it operates slower, and way of out sync
-“Midzou” Tom Fornelli
- Shocking how similar we looked to Vandy athlete wise, mentioned they have improved, but that’s not good
- Says they are in a slog and need to get back to an attacking style of offense
- Bud thinks they absolutely should not get in at 10-2

Hard to argue any of this. Hopefully, we can turn it around, but we’re running out of time
