BASKETBALL The Next Five

All the talk heading into December was the five game segment of kU, UCF, Illinois, Kentucky and Arkansas. Most said one win would be great. Mizzou got three. The expectations went from this is a possible bubble team to this team is probably a tournament team.

The next five are where we determine what this team really is. Vandy, @A&M, @Florida, Arkansas, Alabama. Three of the worst 5-6 teams in the league and then two really tough teams on your home court.

Is this team going to be a Top 4 team in the league and competing for a Top 16 seed? Probably need to go 4-1. 3-2 is the mark you need to hit if you want to stay out in front of the bubble muck. Anything worse? Don’t even want to talk about it.

Interesting hoops transfer portal big man prospect for next year

We know we tried hard to get the Western Kentucky big guy. But all is not lost. Check out Connor Williams #50 for Fisher, a seven footer who can drain three pointers effortlessly, snags rebounds, and passes well from the high post...a true "positionless basketball" guy that fits our system perfectly. And best of all his lifestyle choices making him relatable to most Rivals message board posters.

BASKETBALL Biggest call of the game

Kobe makes two free throws to make it a three-point game. Hit throws blatant elbow after getting inbounds pass. Two refs looking right at it, and yet they don’t see fit to stop and review. Hogs make a 3 when Mizzou should’ve been shooting two FTs and keeping possession with a chance to take the lead. A potential 7-point swing.

And still don’t understand how they messed up the shot clock on the throwaway at the end of the first half. Had a chance to go up 15 or 16 but turned it over because of a short clock.

That said, I love this team. Talk about grit. And don’t think a raucous doesn’t influence officials. Great to see another sellout at Mizzou Arena.

NEW STORY THE CHAMBER: DECEMBER 30 2022

We are proud to welcome Billiards on Broadway back for another year as our partner and the presenting sponsor of the juiciest dish on PowerMizzou. If you're looking for the inside scoop on Mizzou recruiting, The Chamber is the place. If you're looking for the best burger in Columbia, Billiards on Broadway is your go-to. A great place to watch a game, play some pool and pair a great local beer selection with one of Columbia's best meals. Local sports, Local beer, Local food--all under one roof at Billiards!

Let's just be up front here: It's a dead period. And in terms of actual news, things are dead. There's no real movement right now. This will be a speculative Chamber. Things should start to pick up next week.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Have done some checking and do expect the staff to hit the road a little bit in the next week or so. We'll do our best to track down exactly who they're going to see. Between playing Illinois and Kentucky, Christmas and the mess that trying to travel is right now, it's been a little bit slow. Throw in the fact that the first part of the 2023 class signed in November and the bulk of the rest (if not the entire thing) is going to come from the transfer portal, and you get some down time right now.

The most common question we're getting is who can come back. You can always reference our scholarship chart here. The upshot is that Tre Gomillion, DeAndre Gholston and D'Moi Hodge are absolutely done after this season. Everyone else has another year if they want to use it. Those three players have already been replaced on the scholarship chart with the signees. That means the Tigers sit at 12 players who could be part of next year's roster.

Let's be honest: It would be fairly shocking if Isiaih Mosley comes back. I'm not saying it's impossible, but the experience hasn't exactly been smooth so far. For now, we're assuming that's another spot that opens up. That means Mizzou has two spots for the spring/portal period. Obviously that number could increase with players who choose not to use the COVID year or if anyone transfers out after the season. But for now, we'll operate with the number at two.

We'll be on the road for the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield on January 14-16. There will be some Mizzou targets in action. We'll see them play live and do our best to catch up with all of them and write individual stories following the event.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Right now, we have Mizzou scheduled to have 86 scholarship players for next season. That is going to change. We've previously reported we expect Luke Griffin to enter the transfer portal. It would be a pretty big surprise if a few more didn't (we're looking specifically at running back here). Then there's still the possibility that guys are going to leave for the NFL or simply opt not to use the COVID year. The other thing to remember is that the player has to be welcomed back to use the COVID year. Here are the players we haven't gotten a firm declaration from.

Darius Robinson: Announcing his plans Sunday
Trajan Jeffcoat: Didn't play in the bowl game. The official reason was injury. We'd expect him to move on.
Javon Foster: Not sure on this one. Haven't heard that he's leaving, but he hasn't said he's definitely coming back.
Xavier Delgado: Not sure on this one. Haven't heard that he's leaving, but he hasn't said he's definitely coming back.
Daniel Robledo: Didn't play much this year. Could see Mizzou needing a spot.
Joseph Charleston: No reason to think he isn't coming back, but we haven't seen an official word
Ty'Ron Hopper: Not sure what to expect here. The deadline to declare for the NFL Draft is January 16.

So if you add up all of that, there could still be up to probably 10-12 spots left. We don't think it's going to be that high, that's just the maximum. More realistic is probably somewhere around five or six. Those would be used almost exclusively on transfers. The movement there could happen at almost any time, though announcements probably wouldn't come until after New Year's at this point. There is another portal window for the first half of May after schools finish up spring football and there's probably going to be some movement then as well. Bottom line, there's no way this class is finalized before early to mid-summer.

Here's what we think Mizzou needs in the portal:

Quarterback--We still think it happens. Don't have a name, but I would expect Missouri to add someone
Running Back--They need at least one assuming the transfers out that we anticipate happen
Tight End--Not sure Missouri has a starter for next year on the roster right now. The position definitely needs to be upgraded
Offensive Line--Probably need at least two here. Maybe more
Defense End--New offers are still going out and the Tigers are definitely looking to add an edge rusher in the portal

That's six spots. We believe those are the priorities. Punter is a possibility. Linebacker could change if Hopper leaves.

There's a transfer visit window next Wednesday through Sunday. The Tigers could bring some guys in and if they do, we'll do our best to tell you who they are. When we talked to him before the bowl game, Eli Drinkwitz indicated the following weekend (January 15) would likely be more when Mizzou would target transfers. That is the first of three weekends before the dead period begins again on January 30. So there will be some activity in January and we will track that here.

As we said at the top, not a lot in terms of concrete information. It's the calm before the storm right now. Things will pick up over the next week or two and we'll have you covered when that happens.

Important Note here: If the first response to the Chamber is an actual response and not "First" or some equivalent of "First" the responder will get a $50 Billiards gift card. An edited response will not be accepted. If the first response is "First" or some variation, the offer is off the table.

Big picture: not a huge deal

Bud Walton is a tough place to win, and we looked at the kU-UCF-Illinois-Kentucky-Ark stretch as a massive test. Think we would have been happy with 2-3, they went 3-2 and should have been 4-1.

Tonight doesn’t really change the opinion or scope of this team at all. Close loss @ Arkansas plus a win over Vandy won’t ding us hardly at all in the rankings. That kind of just felt like two really good teams battling. Really sucks blowing a 17 point lead and GOD i hate losing to Musselman, but big picture no sweat. Cannot wait for 1/18. First week of classes so students will be back in full force, Mizzou Arena will be rocking. On to Vandy.

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS ON MIZZOU'S 74-68 LOSS TO ARKANSAS

-We haven't seen Mizzou's offense sputter that badly in a long time. Again, Arkansas is a phenomenal defensive team. But the Tigers really struggled to find good shots without running the ball up in transition. Slowing down and playing in the halfcourt hasn't really ever suited this team very well. The Razorbacks exploited it. I don't know that the defense was any worse -- I just think Arkansas figured out how to attack it and starting knocking down their 3s.

-Kobe wasn't too much of a factor, either. They tried posting him up and he would either try bullying Mekhi Mitchell or speeding around him. Neither really got much going (credit to Mitchell, it was good defense). But like I said after the Kentucky game, when Kobe plays like the best player on the team, everything else falls into place. When he doesn't, you're having to ask guys to overextend. That was the case tonight.

-This was undoubtedly a game that Isiaih Mosley could've really helped. I don't have any info about why he isn't with the team tonight or why he hasn't been playing other than what's already been put out. But when the offense gets cold, like it did tonight, having a microwave-type guy to throw in the mix would've been pretty handy.

-The good news: It wasn't as bad as the Kansas game. The crowd really took the wind out of their sails at times but they kept coming back. I thought the corner 3 from Tre Gomillion and the charge from Nick Honor were both huge plays. They were super competitive against a really, really good team. They had a chance to win it I think this game bodes well for the rest of the year.

-As we've said before, Mizzou coming out of their toughest stretch of the season at 3-2 is impressive. They realistically only needed one win out of those five to meet expectations. The bar has been raised, though. They'll likely be in the top half of the SEC. But to get a double bye in the SEC tournament, they can't afford to blow many more 17-point leads.
