How many portal OL do we need…

…improve our starting line?

In other words, not looking at depth, but who are we good with from the current roster, going into next year as a starter? So what is the minimum number of starters will we need to get out of the portal to upgrade the position group?

For instance, if we got a Maietti type upgrade at Center, would that allow us to move Tollison to guard, so we would feel better about both positions potentially?

BASKETBALL POSTGAME THREAD: KENTUCKY

-Oscar Tshiebwe: "We got killed on defense tonight."

-Tshiebwe said Mizzou's defense was different from what he's season so far this season. "They just kept coming and coming and coming."

-Tshiebwe: "We cannot let teams bully, bully, bully us like we're little kids."

-John Calipari gives no opening statement. He's asked how Kobe was so good against them tonight. He recalls that Kobe was good last year, too.

-Cal said you have to give Mizzou credit. "They deserved to win the game because of how they played."

-Cal thought when his team settled in they were fine going against Mizzou's zone. But they weren't making open shots. "That takes the wind out of your sails."

-Cal: "I knew they would play better because they just beat Illinois. But I thought we would play better."

-Cal said Dennis Gates has done a great job with the program so far. He's got the team playing a system that fits well.

-Kentucky's SID said she thinks CJ Fredrick may have dislocated his finger but didn't know for sure. Cal said all he was told was he was out for the game.

-Gates said he loved the atmosphere tonight and thanked the fans and students that came back after Christmas.

-Gates: "About the game, I thought our guys played OK."

-Gates on what the team took away from the Kansas loss: "It's only a loss if you don't fix things that can be corrected. It's only a loss if you don't take a lesson ... I don't think our guys blinked one bit. They stayed together."

-Gates: "SEAN WAS A BEAST." He couldn't get East in the game as much in the second half but that East was coaching his butt off.

-East: "We're all pretty much dogs."

-East on the moment Aidan Shaw got tangled up with Tshiebwe: "We expect that from him."

-East on what impresses him about Kobe Brown: "Everything ... We were telling him he should've had 50 the other night, he kept passing the ball.

-Gates has brought up before the importance of getting better over the winter break. I asked Sean and Kobe what goes into that for them and what the difference has been during these last few weeks. Gates looked at both players and said "Don't give him the secrets."

-Gates thought they got Kentucky off balance by switching from their man-to-man press to the 1-3-1 zone.

-Gates said the toughest game to play all season is when players are coming back from Christmas "and they gotta hear from their uncle how bad the head coach is." Mizzou managed it today.

You know we've been waiting for this a long time

when the crowd cheers loudly when our team successfully breaks a press and then cheers again when our team slows down the pace to run time rather than shoot an ill-advised three with 20 left on the shot clock.

We are a fanbase let loose in a candy store. So many sweet treats.

Also, the drive back to LSMO is way more fun thanks to victories and Apple Car Play. First season with a new car and I can listen to Gabe and Drew on the postgame show.

BASKETBALL Ranking Mizzou Players

We’ve had this discussion in bits and pieces throughout the year. I’m curious to see how everyone ranks Mizzou’s players based on a mixture of both talent and performance this year.

Here’s my ranking with tiers:

Tier 1:
1: Kobe Brown
2: D’Moi Hodge
-These are your stars. Brown we’ve known about for awhile. What a beast and he looks way more comfortable in Gates system now. Hodge? Man, this kid is a fun player to watch. Crazy fast, strong scorer, and very confident.

Tier 2:
3: Nick Honor
4: Noah Carter
-These guys are your calming presence who can do a lot of things very well. Honor is Mr. Reliable. He can go off for 15 points from time to time but more importantly he will protect the ball, play D, and command the offense. Carter is your Swiss Army knife who can put up 15-20 points if you ask him to or focus on shutting down forwards.

Tier 3:
5: Dre Gholston
6: Sean East
7: Tre Gomillion
-Gholston has been a very pleasant surprise and he has really taken off offensively these last 3 games vs tourney teams. We all know East has high potential but lacks consistency. Gomillion is the heart and soul guy on this team. Tough group to rank.

Tier 4:
8: Aidan Shaw
9: Ronnie Degray
-Shaw is working his way into the rotation as a true freshman very nicely. I expect him to rise to top 3-4 on this list in the next year or two. Huge potential. Degray has improved a TON from last year and is a strong player but still lacking offensively. That’s ok.

Not rated: Isiaih Mosley, but I guess I’d put him 3rd based mostly on raw talent rather than performance.
