That allowed Mizzou to clinch that bowl berth despite finishing the season with as many losses as wins — six victories, which didn’t exactly come against a murderers’ row of foes. MU beat Louisiana Tech, Abilene Christian, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and New Mexico State before the Tigers nipped the Razorbacks to qualify for one of the bloated lineup of 41 bowls. Many are just made-for-ESPN productions, some of which ESPN even owns, that are sparsely attended in stadiums that basically serve as huge, cavernous, TV studios.
Contrast that to the 1976 season, when MU also won six games. The conquests? Southern California, Ohio State and Nebraska,
all on the road, plus North Carolina, Kansas State and Colorado at home. The Tigers finished with a better record (6-5) then than they did this year.
But in that pre-watered-down era, there was no postseason invitation for coach
Al Onofrio‘s program (there were only 12 bowls then, and no playoffs). Cries for “Uncle Al” to be fired rang out, but he came back for another year.
