FOOTBALL RECRUITING SIAP: Malik Hornsby

According to Mike Farrell, MU seems to be the favorite to land Hornsby. But in a portal recap two weeks @GabeD said maybe not as a QB. Is Farrell grasping at straws here or is there fire to the smoke?

BASKETBALL Interesting comment by Dave Matter from his online chat yesterday...

Matter credits our two walk-ons for some of the team's success:

  • Good to see sellout. Wins definitely help attendance, but I also feel this team plays an enjoyable style to watch.

No doubt. They play fast and aggressive. They make winning plays on both ends of the floor that win over the crowd. They're charismatic. They seem to enjoy playing with each other.
Small point but an important one: There's so much energy on their bench and I believe a lot of that is due to the walk-ons, Sternberg and Francois. It's their job to keep the bench engaged and energized. That helps the team on the floor and the crowd, too. It's all calculated and by design. Sternberg goes up and down the bench every couple minutes and touches every player and coach. That's not by accident. Those two guys have specific roles/jobs on the bench. It was clearly lacking the last couple years when MU didn't have walk-ons.

Fouls called in Basketball

For many years I have been watching basketball referees call fouls that I believe should not be called. For this year I hadn't thought about those much until I was watching part of a game the other day.
What I saw was a series of fouls called when a dribbler was bumped by a defender that was not moving in any way to pass, shoot or any action leading to a game changing play. In fact, none of the cases was the ball handler doing anything but changing his own location. IMO, this kind of foul should never be called because it doesn't actually interrupt significant play. Since my days of playing I have always been an advocate that there should be little to no fouls called when the only thing that actually happens is the interruption of the game by the refs.

Now, having told that side of the story, there is another side. There are times that there should be calls, when they are not, but I do understand how hard it is for refs to differentiate between calls that should be important and those that have nothing to do with the flow of the game. I spent some time as a ref too. Training, which I doubt is done all that much for refs should be done because unnecessary foul calling just irritates fans and opposing coaches plus it lengthens games.
I will now point out that other side of those calls too. That's the non calls for bumps when there should be. E.G., in one game where I observed several of those I mentioned above, I saw two instances, one where an offensive player went up for his shot and the defender bumped him in almost the exact same way as I described above. In the other the player was making a pass. In both cases I believe a foul should have been called and wasn't. In the case of the shooter, the shot went in and the other it did did effect the pass. If one is called when no pertinent action is happening in the game it should have been called when there was.
As, I said I know it is very hard for refs to make correct calls all the time, but training in off season EVERY YEAR should help with those.

One Shameful Moment

An article all should be aware of that proves Bill Self is a trash human being.

More evidence that bowl games matter…to players, too, Gabe…

Watching the ‘Tony The TIger‘ Sun Bowl (home to one of my top 10 worst Mizzou memories-it’s a long list)…Pitt and UCLA just put on an amazing show. You could tell how much both teams wanted to win this game, and how devastated the UCLA bench was when Pitt kicked a long FG to win the game…it’s not just the fans.

I think under Gates sky's the limit

I'm sitting here thinking like... If Gates can do this with basically transfers and no true big.... What will he be able to do if he shapes his teams like the FL State basketball teams? Athletes and length at every position. This type of play is the type of offense kids WANT to play in. I'm wondering if Gates can keep home some of the best recruits in Missouri..... Or will they want to come? If he does this man may take us to the promised land we've been waiting on our whole lives in Missouri basketball. Im actually stunned he's been able to do this with his 3 major signings not being major contributors.

Bowl Games

I don't care what you think about ku or ND, these games remind me why bowl games are so fun. Click on a game you don't have much interest in and by the 4th quarter, you are completely engaged! Back in the day, bowl games were great, you had no clue about the two teams playing on the Bluebonnet Bowl, but you got to watch football on a Wednesday. Just entertain me.
