BASKETBALL RECRUITING Transfer Portal Central

Even after doing the unimaginable, Missouri finished this season with a sour taste in its mouth.

The Tigers went from a winless conference campaign in Dennis Gates' second year as head coach to winning a conference tournament game and receiving the sixth seed in the NCAA Tournament a season later.

But losing three out of their final four regular-season games, the Tigers stumbled into postseason play before being handled by Drake on March 20. Missouri will now turn fully to the NCAA transfer portal, which opened March 24 and runs through April 22.

With the coming implementation of revenue sharing and NIL changes, basketball will receive a cutdown to a 15-player roster limit, with all 15 eligible to receive scholarships. The Tigers had 18 players on roster this season with three walk-ons. So essentially, the walk-on spots are being removed.

Remaining eligibility

Missouri has 10 scholarship players retaining eligibility from this past season. After missing most of the year with a lower-leg injury and not playing in a single game, freshman center Trent Burns became eligible for a redshirt.

In accordance with a new NCAA ruling, Tennessee-Martin transfer guard Jacob Crews received a waiver for an extra year of eligibility after spending a season at junior college Daytona State. Crews said he will return to Missouri for his final year of eligibility.

Missouri signed Randall and Rowe in the 2025 class. Bolded names are transfer additions.

Transfer timeline

March 25: Aidan Shaw announced he entered the transfer portal. The forward spent three seasons with Missouri, looking to use his final year of eligibility elsewhere. Shaw verbally committed to Boston College on March 31.

March 27: The Tigers received the commitment of Jevon Porter, a source confirmed to MizzouToday.

April 4: Freshman forward Marcus Allen entered the transfer portal, a source confirmed to MizzouToday.

April 6: The Tigers received the commitment of Oklahoma transfer and Jefferson City product Luke Northweather, a source confirmed to MizzouToday.

April 7: The Tigers received the commitment of UCLA transfer Sebastian Mack, sources told Rivals.com.

Out of eligibility

Missouri said goodbye to Tamar Bates, Josh Gray, Caleb Grill, Tony Perkins and Marques Warrick. All six Tigers transferred into the program. Bates and Grill played two seasons while Gray, Perkins and Warrick all spent one year in Columbia.

Gray entered the transfer portal April 9, a source confirmed. There's belief Gray made the move in the case eligibility rules change this offseason and allow the center one more season of college basketball.

Biggest needs

Shooters

Losing Grill, Bates and Warrick takes a significant amount of the 3-point shooting ability off the roster.

The Tigers still have Crews, plus Robinson and Pierce made some strides as deep shooters this season, but adding an extra 3-and-D wing or two would be very helpful.

Depth guards

That's also a whole lot of guards leaving the roster.

With Robinson, Barrett and Boateng returning, that's a good base to start off with, but Gates likes to run a lot of guards out there throughout the game. There will need to be a few coming in, and probably more than one with a significant amount of experience to help guide the young guys.

A scoring 5

Gray was a solid addition to the Tigers this season, his rebounding came in very handy at times. But it's no secret the Tigers lacked a scoring presence in the interior at times.

Adding a center who can score and help guide Marshall and Burns into their college careers would be very helpful. If he could also serve as a rim protector on defense, that would be huge.

BREAKING NEWS…. Rob Summers departs for Cleveland State

Missouri men's basketball assistant coach Rob Summers was hired as the next head coach of Cleveland State, where he previously served as an assistant under current Missouri head coach Dennis Gates for the Vikings. Summers was on staff with the Tigers for one season.

"Coach Summers will be a Division I head coach," Gates said in a release. "He is passionate about the game of basketball. He provides the authentic love necessary in developing young people and possesses an undefeated work ethic. He is great at building relationships within our campus community and nationally. He is a star."

Todd Golden

Since he was in the mix for our last coaching search...

- Had a rough first year going 16-17. Still managed to get 9 conference wins though 😉
- Went and got 6 players in the portal, 3 of which are Florida's leading scorers this year and averaging >14 PPG
- Currently sitting on 21 wins and Lunardi has Florida as a #6 seed in the tourney

Golden inherited a bad team but immediately reconstructed it using the portal. This is the benchmark next season for Gates, not a .500 season like some of you have said.

Notes from Drinkwitz press conference (updated with press conference videos)

Media got to talk with Eliah Drinkwitz for a spring ball wrap up. Here are some of my notes.

I'll have video up in a couple of hours.

"We have some portal entries. I expect we'll have a few more." He added that he doesn't expect many more, said maybe as many as eight total.

On the defensive end group "That is a group that has an incredible amount of depth and talent." He talked about them a lot and mentioned he expects six or seven guys to be in the rotation and getting snaps.

"There is a healthy competition in the defensive tackle room." He added that Jalen Marshall and Marquise Gracial have been asked to wait their turns, and now they're not waiting anymore.

"I think (Nicholas) Rodriguez probably had the best spring out of anybody on the defensive side of the ball."

"I thought (Daylan Carnell) had his best spring since he's been here."

"I thought consistently, the defense was better than the offense." He added that was largely expected because of the quarterback competition.

"It was clear to us after probably the first week and a half of spring that the (quarterback) competition was between Beau (Pribula) and Sam (Horn)." This came after some glowing talk about Matt Zollers, but as expected the main two made it obvious early on, which likely led to the ultimate decision for Drew Pyne to transfer.

"Beau (Pribula) was every bit what we expected and was probably a better passer than we expected."

Marquise Davis, excellent runner, excellent runner. He's going to have an impact as a true freshman."

"I'm as confident at each position on our roster as I've ever been."

BREAKING NEWS…. Mizzou women add Saniah Tyler

MizzouToday has confirmed reports the Tiger women have their first transfer portal addition of the cycle in Kentucky's Saniah Tyler.

Tyler was a highly-touted high school prospect in the class of 2022 when she joined the Wildcats coming out of Florissant, and Incarnate Word Academy.

She was the St. Louis Post Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year in 2021-22.

She played nine games as a true fresman, then had a bigger role in 2023-24, making 13 starts in 32 appearances.

She averaged 10.2 points per game, the second most on the Wildcats, while bringing down 1.8 rebounds per game. She scored 10 or more points 17 times, 15 or more points six times and scored 20 points twice.

In 2024-25, her role dropped to just 2.3 minutes per game, appering off the bench in 26 games.

She will have one year of eligibility

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Notebook: Influence of Devin Nicholson; New WR target

When former Missouri linebacker Devin Nicholson returned home, he soon overlapped with one of the Tigers' next targets.

Nicholson, a three-star in the 2019 class, now serves as the linebackers coach at his alma mater, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech. While the coaching staff changed during his time with the Tigers, Nicholson still told Khalief Canty Jr., a top offensive tackle target for the Tigers, to check out Missouri.

"He told me I should really look into it," Canty said, "and other than that, we got a competitive relationship. Us as CT linemen, we carry the team, so in practice, we are getting each other better far as linebackers and offensive linemen."

Offered by offensive line coach Brandon Jones in February, Canty made his first unofficial visit to Missouri for Junior Day in March. He'll return for an official visit the weekend of June 20.

"It was great, man," Canty said after his March trip, "and what I think about it is, if I go there, I know I can change the program to a championship program, and that's what I'm all about is the team and winning."

BREAKING NEWS…. Ashton Judd in transfer portal

MizzouToday has confirmed reports that Mizzou guard Ashton Judd has entered the transfer portal.

Judd was a key starter each of the past two seasons and averaged 11.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game last year.

Judd is the fifth Tiger to head out this offseason along with Lucija Milkovic, Tilda Sjokvist, Hilke Feldrappe and Londyn Oliphant

BREAKING NEWS…. JUCO PUNTER COMMITS TO MIZZOU

Missouri landed the second punter it needed.

El Cajon (Cali.) Grossmont C.C. transfer John Butcher committed to the Tigers on Monday as a preferred walk-on. The junior visited Missouri on Wednesday. Butcher will have three years of eligibility remaining and arrive to campus in likely late May or early June.

"I felt at home the whole time," Butcher said. "The coaches are amazing, and the whole staff, the whole program is just amazing, so I figured I'd take my talents there and see what I can do."

Butcher totaled 2,768 yards on 71 attempts his sophomore season, averaging 39 yards per punt. He booted a long of 79 yards and pinned 22 kicks inside the 20-yard line. Butcher also held for place kickers on field goals and extra point attempts.

"My directional punting was very good this year," the San Diego native said, "and also my hang-to-distance ratio was also very good as well."

While a few other schools expressed interest in Butcher, an opportunity with Missouri came initially as a surprise, one he came to a quick decision to pursue. Butcher only announced an offer from South Dakota School of Mines in January.

"They're very transparent guys," Butcher said of special teams coordinator Erik Link and special teams assistant Brock Olivo. "It seems like they're going to get the best out of me, and that's what I wanted."

Beginning this upcoming season, the NCAA will enact a new roster limit of 105 players, meaning every rostered athlete will be eligible for a scholarship. Missouri saw a mass exodus of walk-on specialists in December and added only punter Connor Weselman from Stanford in the winter transfer window.

"We'll bring in at least once more guy to help in that area," Link said after a spring practice in March.

#Tigerstyle 2023-2024 Offseason

Another year, another Top 10 preseason ranking and I would argue the #2 recruiting class coming in next year. Oh, another thing, #Tigerstyle has also produced a back-to-back World Champion and undisputed best wrestler in America with Mr. J'den Cox.

2019-2020 is a year of transition. Eierman is taking an Olympic redshirt. Zach Elam will be joining him. That means Grant Leeth and his bionic neck move to 141lb with an unknown at 285.

This isn't the year we threaten the top dogs, BUT it is the year we set the foundation for a national title run in 2020-2021.

Big test today versus Virginia Tech at 11am central on ESPN+.

Some key matches: 125, 149, 157, 165, 184.

I wish I had more time to breakdown matches individual, but our friend Sean Mael at Missouriwrestling.com
