SEBASTIAN MACK WEARS EMOTION ON SLEEVE, BRINGING ENERGY TO MIZZOU

Sebastian Mack drove down the left side of the court, weaved to the opposite end and pulled up from 30 feet.

He sank it.

Mack defeated rival Henderson (Nev.) Liberty at the buzzer. Right after Liberty tied it at 55-55 with five seconds left, Henderson (Nev.) Coronado coach, Jeff Kaufman, held his timeout, wanting his senior guard to get the ball and go.

"We were all celebrating, and I looked over and he ran down their bench," Kaufman laughed. "It's not a great sportsmanship thing, but this was our rival school. It was a Tarkanian tournament. It was to advance to the final. That's just the guy he was, man. We're all celebrating, and he's proving his point, flexing his muscles."

Mack was fiercely loyal to his Coronado teammates. He brought a strong locker room presence and defended every player in the same uniform as him.

"I'm making him sound like he's a bully or something. He's not," Kaufman said. "He's just got that mentality where he looks you in the eye and you know that he's serious."

Hailing from Chicago, Mack quickly showed his toughness when he moved to Nevada. He began his high school career at Las Vegas (Nev.) Durango before transferring for his junior and senior seasons. Kaufman previously coached Chicago products, but Mack boasted another level of confidence on the court compared to past players.

"If you get in a fight, he's the guy you want on your side fighting with you," Kaufman said. "He's relentless, not that he's dirty or nasty or anything like that. When it comes to wanting to win and when it comes to wanting to play hard, he is a no nonsense kind of player."

That reflected in Mack's time at UCLA.

Before announcing his transfer commitment to Missouri on Monday, Mack played two seasons for the Bruins. Opponents didn't always want to be around him because of his physicality, boasting a knack for rebounding as a guard and running downhill at opponents on both offense and defense.

"He'll just go through a building," Kaufman said. "It's really just his mentality about how he approaches life, and sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but for the most part, it's very good. He's all around a good person."

Knowing Mick Cronin for years, Kaufman got the UCLA coach on campus to see Mack play. Mack set the tone early with a strong performance against powerhouse Montverde (Fla.) Academy and became a top target for the Bruins.

In his freshman season at UCLA, Mack started 30 games, but he wasn't supposed to.

Kaufman told his former player numerous times that he had a lot to learn, but with a twist of fate, one that featured roster complications, Mack was third in scoring for the Bruins his freshman year.

"That's not how that was supposed to work," Kaufman said. "It's UCLA for God's sake. ... Now, you're in a situation to take advantage of it, and he did. The fans really liked Sebastian out there, and he did what he was supposed to do. And he came through."

UCLA built up its team more through the transfer portal ahead of this past season. Mack embraced a new role coming off the bench, and even in times of needing a score late, the sophomore was always on the court.

Mack received interest from Florida State in high school, and although Missouri coach Dennis Gates was removed from his time on the Seminoles' staff, that coaching tree played a part in Mack's decision in the transfer portal.

"I think it's the right guy for him," Kaufman said. "Sebastian needs a certain kind of coach. I really think he does. Somebody that can be tough with him but yet understand him. And I think that Gates does that. I think Cronin did that, too. ... Sebastian needs a little conflict every now and then. He needs to be driven."

Entering his junior season, Mack received a push for professionalism from Kaufman. His former coach preached being first to workouts, staying late and doing the extra things. With those goals, Kaufman predicted Mack will thrive with more freedom in the Tigers' system.

"If you want to continue your career, it's going to be necessary," Kaufman said. "Sebastian has always been good about that, but I feel now it's very, very important for him. ... It all starts his work ethic, his professionalism, and he's committed to bringing that to Missouri."

PAST HARDSHIP MOLDS MIKAI GBAYOR INTO HARD-HITTING LEADER

On the eve of his youth football season opener, Mikai Gbayor lost his rock.

Packed into a car with his siblings and parents, Gbayor watched his father pull over to assist a family friend in an argument, and his life instantly changed. His mother, Nilsa Gbayor, was struck by stray gun fire, losing her life at 39 years old.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING Portal updates -- April 10

Like Josh Gray, Syracuse big man Eddie Lampkin Jr. entered the transfer portal this week with no eligibility remaining and the hope the NCAA changes a ruling. Missouri reached out, per Sam Kayser of League Ready. Lampkin averaged 11.5 points and 9.6 rebounds this past season for the Orange.

Notes from Drinkwitz press conference (updated with press conference videos)

Media got to talk with Eliah Drinkwitz for a spring ball wrap up. Here are some of my notes.

I'll have video up in a couple of hours.

"We have some portal entries. I expect we'll have a few more." He added that he doesn't expect many more, said maybe as many as eight total.

On the defensive end group "That is a group that has an incredible amount of depth and talent." He talked about them a lot and mentioned he expects six or seven guys to be in the rotation and getting snaps.

"There is a healthy competition in the defensive tackle room." He added that Jalen Marshall and Marquise Gracial have been asked to wait their turns, and now they're not waiting anymore.

"I think (Nicholas) Rodriguez probably had the best spring out of anybody on the defensive side of the ball."

"I thought (Daylan Carnell) had his best spring since he's been here."

"I thought consistently, the defense was better than the offense." He added that was largely expected because of the quarterback competition.

"It was clear to us after probably the first week and a half of spring that the (quarterback) competition was between Beau (Pribula) and Sam (Horn)." This came after some glowing talk about Matt Zollers, but as expected the main two made it obvious early on, which likely led to the ultimate decision for Drew Pyne to transfer.

"Beau (Pribula) was every bit what we expected and was probably a better passer than we expected."

Marquise Davis, excellent runner, excellent runner. He's going to have an impact as a true freshman."

"I'm as confident at each position on our roster as I've ever been."

#Tigerstyle 2023-2024 Offseason

Another year, another Top 10 preseason ranking and I would argue the #2 recruiting class coming in next year. Oh, another thing, #Tigerstyle has also produced a back-to-back World Champion and undisputed best wrestler in America with Mr. J'den Cox.

2019-2020 is a year of transition. Eierman is taking an Olympic redshirt. Zach Elam will be joining him. That means Grant Leeth and his bionic neck move to 141lb with an unknown at 285.

This isn't the year we threaten the top dogs, BUT it is the year we set the foundation for a national title run in 2020-2021.

Big test today versus Virginia Tech at 11am central on ESPN+.

Some key matches: 125, 149, 157, 165, 184.

I wish I had more time to breakdown matches individual, but our friend Sean Mael at Missouriwrestling.com

Mizzou MBB staffer departs for VMI

Missouri lost a second staffer in as many days. Spending one season as the assistant director of basketball operations for the Tigers, Nick Korta accepted a position as an assistant coach for VMI, the program announced Thursday. Korta earned his bachelor's degree from Cleveland State, where he was a graduate assistant under current Missouri head coach Dennis Gates. He was also a graduate assistant under former Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton during the 2020-21 season.

VMI associate head coach Xavier Silas previously served as an analyst at Missouri under Gates. Former Tigers player development coordinator Perin Foote was a VMI assistant this past season, but he's currently not listed on staff.

MizzouToday has confirmed reports the Tiger women have their first transfer portal addition of the cycle in Kentucky's Saniah Tyler.

She was the St. Louis Post Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year in 2021-22.

She played nine games as a true fresman, then had a bigger role in 2023-24, making 13 starts in 32 appearances.

FOOTBALL NEZ construction photos (with update from April 9)

I'll somewhat regularly update this thread with photos of the NEZ construction so everyone outside of Columbia will have an idea of how it's coming along.

Here are a few from Jan. 30.

I was having some trouble uploading within the thread, so made a small photo gallery for it.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Notebook: Influence of Devin Nicholson; New WR target

When former Missouri linebacker Devin Nicholson returned home, he soon overlapped with one of the Tigers' next targets.

Nicholson, a three-star in the 2019 class, now serves as the linebackers coach at his alma mater, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech. While the coaching staff changed during his time with the Tigers, Nicholson still told Khalief Canty Jr., a top offensive tackle target for the Tigers, to check out Missouri.

"He told me I should really look into it," Canty said, "and other than that, we got a competitive relationship. Us as CT linemen, we carry the team, so in practice, we are getting each other better far as linebackers and offensive linemen."

Offered by offensive line coach Brandon Jones in February, Canty made his first unofficial visit to Missouri for Junior Day in March. He'll return for an official visit the weekend of June 20.

"It was great, man," Canty said after his March trip, "and what I think about it is, if I go there, I know I can change the program to a championship program, and that's what I'm all about is the team and winning."
