FOOTBALL QUICK 3RD QUARTER THOUGHTS VS. WAKE FOREST

Sixth Series for the defense: AT Perry will continue to find the open parts of the zone and just wait for the ball. He’s got eight receptions for 86 yards. He almost added another catch for 32 yards, but he didn’t have full control on the way down. Realus George with a big tackle for loss on third and one that forces a punt on Wake Forest’s own 48-yard line. Abrams-Draine is still fielding punts.

Sixth Series for the offense: Tavorus Jones sighting on second down. He caught a pass, but then got his legs chopped from under him. Brady Cook scrambles for another first down after a gain of 12 and then on the next play gets drilled for roughing the passer. Cook takes so many hits. No matter how you feel about him you have to admit he has heart. Heismeyer with a hold. So, that’s four offensive line penalties accepted (five committed overall) on the day and there are 23 minutes left as I write this. Schrader gains 14 yards on third and 17 and then Cook scrambles for seven and the first down on fourth down. Burden has returned. Cody Schrader from four yards out for a touchdown. That was a 13-play, 86-yard drive that took six minutes and 22 seconds. WF 14, MIZ 17

Seventh Series for the defense: Hartman dotted the Mizzou defense on three straight passes easily. The last pass was for 48 yards which looked like busted coverage and then Carlies couldn’t make an open-field tackle. He threw for 65 yards and that was a four-play, 75-yard drive that took a minute and 16 seconds. PAT is no good. WF 20, MIZ 17

Seventh Series for the offense: Mitchell Walters with his third penalty of the game on second down. It’s another hold. When it rains it pours. That was a pretty tough and pretty fast three-and-out series.

Eighth Series for the defense: Chad Bailey lives in the backfield today. He teams up with Landry to get a shared sack. Another quick three and out for Wake Forest. Then the Demon Deacons shanked a punt, so Missouri gets the ball on their own 49-yard line.

Eighth Series for the offense: Mizzou tries a double reverse flea flicker and Cook gets drilled and it's incomplete. Then Cook missed Mekhi Miller in the flat on third down and fourth down, so it’s turnover on downs.

Ninth Series for the defense: So, these teams are trading punts. Wake Forest holds on a fourth and one and will punt.

FOOTBALL QUICK 2ND QUARTER THOUGHTS VS. WAKE FOREST

Second Series for offense (continued): Walters who got a false start to start this drive has subbed in for Connor Wood at right guard. Wood is being carted to the locker room. Luther Burden with a drop on a drag route. He’s done that about three times on that route this season. He had space in front of him, so I assume he took his eyes off the ball. Brady Cook takes a monster hit on something that probably could’ve been called a facemask.

Third Series for defense: Sam Hartman zipped a pass between three Mizzou defenders for a gain of 27 yards. The lack of pass rush means the wide receivers have time for these quick slants. Offsides on fourth and one on Josh Landry, so it’s a new set of downs for Wake Forest. Sam Hartman with one of the worst quarterback sneaks I’ve seen, but it doesn’t matter because Justice Ellison gets in from a yard out for a touchdown. Eight plays for 63 yards in three minutes. I mean there’s no pass rush and that’s how the Demon Deacons speed downfield. The Tigers are missing Coleman, McGuire and Jeffcoat a lot. Jeffcoat was ruled out in the pregame with a concussion. WF 14, MIZ 3

Third Series for offense: On one play Connor Tollison and Tauskie Dove are down. Tollison can barely put weight on his left leg that looked to get rolled up on. Drake Heismeyer replaces Tollison. Burden gets another pass in the flat and gets a 19-yard gain on the play. The run blocking before Tollison or Wood got hurt was bad and without them – it’s still pretty bad. On third and 16, Wake Forest 95th ranked pass defense had all receivers locked up.

Fourth series for defense: Chad Bailey with a sack. That was the most pressure since the defense’s first drive of the game. Mizzou forced a quick three and out. The offense has to get some points.

Luther Burden saw a short punt and ran full speed to try and pick up the dying ball and he didn’t fully get it so Wake Forest gains possession. That was not a smart play. Burden had to think a Wake Forest player touched it first. That is the only way he can touch the ball and not have a consequence if he fumbled. It’s close, but they said Missouri fumbled on the field. The play stands. That was a trying-to-be-a-hero play and it backfired for Burden, who has played great.

Chad Bailey with a tackle for loss to start the new set of downs. Sam Hartman to AT Perry is like the song you put on repeat. So, Arden Walker committed an obvious offside penalty and the refs missed it. Hartman fired it into double coverage thinking it was a free play and safety Jaylon Carlies intercepted it in the endzone and got a touchback.

Fourth Series for the offense: Schrader starts the drive with a 16-yard run. Cook with a 17-yard completion to Mookie Cooper on third and one and then Cook scrambles for a gain of 36. What a play by Brady Cook. So, he got an early snap and caught it with one hand and ran to the right and dumped it to Peanut Houston for a touchdown. That was a seven-play 80 yard drive that took two minutes and 27 seconds. WF 14, MIZ 10

Up until this point, Missouri had been playing flat. They have now received a boost.

Fifth Series for the defense: Darius Robinson gets a roughing the passer call and it appears Chad Bailey and Ennis Rakestraw are getting into it with each other. They had to be separated. AT Perry is going to kill this secondary with curls and quick outs. That Mizzou pass rush is warming up. Starting to really drill Hartman.

Fifth Series for the offense: Walters with a holding on the first play of this drive. That’s his second penalty. So, Mizzou does just enough to keep the drive going and force Wake Forest to burn their timeouts.

Cook: 16-24, 148 yards, 1 TD
Burden: 5 rec, 68 yards
Cooper: 4 rec, 38 yards
Houston: 4 rec, 21 yards

WF
Hartman: 12-22, 138 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
AT Perry: 6 rec, 71 yards

End of 2nd Quarter: WF 14, MIZ 10
