C game

I don't want to see the offense sputter this weekend like it did against Vandy and BC. I don't want to see the breakdowns in the secondary. Nobody on here does. I'm tired of living on the edge and flirting with disaster.... But I'm just throwing this out here in case we see a little more of the same this weekend than we want to. I don't think A and M is on a different level than BC or Vandy. If anything, they have a less established QB. Maybe they are a step better. Maybe they are a step or two worse. My point being, even if we don't bring that A game and Brady and Company don't sling it around the yard like we've been waiting to see it's still reasonable to think Mizzou has enough to come out with a W. With that said I expect an offensive explosion that has the talking heads finally given Mizzou some love.

FOOTBALL The deep dive: Week 6 running backs

I got a little carried away again, so I've decided to keep these as just position group matchups.

Here's this week's running back comparison.

Receivers will be up around noon, I'll try to have offensive lines up tonight between 6-8 p.m., then defensive groups through the day tomorrow. Going forward they will be a little more spread throughout the week.

Back in town from Europe

What's up. I just got back from going to Paris and Florence Italy with my wife. It was a great trip, but I wasn't able to watch any football, including the Vandy game. I guess I should be grateful, because watching that game live would have given me a heart attack. 🤣

Anyway, I just watched the game for the first time yesterday, and it was what I hoped it would be considering the score. In other words, Mizzou totally outplayed Vandy. The game should not have been close. Mizzou totally shut down Vandy after the first quarter but it just kept shooting itself in the foot offensively. Take away the 3 points that Drink gifted Vandy and the 3 missed field goals, and this game isn't really close.

Drink messed up a couple of times on 4th down. On the first missed FG, I think we should have went for it instead and made a statement. Even if we didn't get it, Vandy would have started deep in their own end. By missing the FG, they got the ball on the 20 yard line. Then Drink goes for it in our own territory (I don't know what in the hell he was thinking), and basically gave Vandy 3 points.

Something else. I think Mizzou should quit trying to hit the big plays as much and just run the damn ball. If we run the ball enough, it will bring in the secondary, and we can hit some deep throws on play action. Noel had 199 yards on 24 carries, but it seems like we could have run the ball more.

I am looking forward to Mizzou playing its best game of the year on Saturday. I think we handle A&M fairly easily and win the game 35 to 17.

1st and 10 3rd Q (14:40 mark) vs Vandy

Brady drops back and fakes the hand-off to Noel. Meanwhile a free rusher blitzes from the right side. Cook makes an athletic play and runs around the rusher to his right and has about 4 to 5 seconds to either run up field or get rid of the ball. Meanwhile Brett Norfleet was WIDE open in the middle of the field maybe 7 yards in front of Cook. Cook runs out of bounds for a loss of 1 in plus territory and comes up gimpy. Its an easy throw (even while on the run) and there is no defender near him. It's shit like that, that frustrates me. He makes a good football play to elude the rush but doesn't have the vision to see the guy right in front of him. This is a play that QB's make every Saturday. The hard part was getting away from the free rusher. He did that no problem. The easy part was to toss it to the open man. I really hope we see a different looking Brady Cook on Saturday.

Introduction

Hey everyone, I'm Kenny Van Doren, and I've joined Yahoo/Rivals as the recruiting editor for MizzouToday.

I covered the 2022 Mizzou football team for the Columbia Missourian before graduating the following semester from the journalism school. I've worked at Bally Sports, Rivals and Major League Baseball since then, and I'm making my second stint on the network after helping out with LSU coverage last winter.

Please fire any questions my way, and I'll be happy to answer them in the morning.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING *** RECENTLY OFFERED DB BACKS OFF INDIANA PLEDGE ***

Byron Baldwin -- who received an offer from Missouri on Sept. 25 -- backed off his Indiana commitment Wednesday.

From @Ryan OBleness:

Baldwin told Rivals he would answer questions on his interest in Missouri. I'll try him again today to get an update on the Tigers.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING *** JACK LANGE DISCUSSES RECRUITING EFFORTS FOR 2025 CLASS ***

As mentioned, I talked with Jack Lange last night about Drinkwitz visiting his past game against Kirkwood. He talked about those conversations with his future head coach as well as what Brandon Jones told him to work on.

We also discussed his efforts in recruiting, especially recently with Dakotah Terrell and Andrew Babalola.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING *** FOUR-STAR DB ANNOUNCES TOP 5 ***

As previously mentioned, Class of 2026 safety Isaiah Williams planned to slate Missouri into his Top 5 announcement. The Tigers are joined by Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State and LSU.

@Marshall Levenson ranked the contenders:

I was wrong..

I was pissed off this morning. I saw threads (mine included) and posts (mine included) being deleted. We hadn't heard much from the new folks. People were having a hard time canceling (including me). I even dm'd one of the new guys talking smack.
Well, I had the wrong attitude. I wound up taking the 6 months free.
I guess after 14 years or so, change is hard. We get used to stuff like the chamber, 10 things, etc. It becomes almost like tradition doing things like pouring that 1st cup of coffee and reading the chamber getting ready for work.
But at the end of the day, these folks are bringing us more content on the teams we love and more is better. Plus, the other site is making it pretty cheap to do both right now.
So welcome Mizzou today staff. I look forward to seeing what you bring the next 6 months

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Quick notes on two of Drinkwitz's game visits in September

Drinkwitz watched Andrew Babalola play this past month at Blue Valley North. Greg Smith said Babalola has quieted updates on his recruitment in recent months, after expecting to announce a commitment in June, but Adam Gorney provided a brief update on the four-star offensive tackle this morning.

During the bye week, Drinkwitz also saw Jack Lange play. I'm talking with the four-star OT commit this evening to catch up on multiple topics.

Tiger Club welcomes Coach Gary Barnett

Now a color analyst with the University of Colorado Buffaloes football program, Gary Barnett is a Mizzou football alum who started his coaching career as a grad assistant under Al Onofrio at his alma mater. The Parkway Central grad went on to be the head coach at Northwestern University and the University of Colorado. Coach Barnett was the speaker at the Tiger Club of KC on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

Club Notes
  • The Club meets each Tuesday during the football season at Westport Flea Market. Buffet lunch begins at 11:30 am, program at Noon.
  • Our October 8 guest will be Kurtis Gregory, former Tiger lineman and current Missouri legislator.
  • Our membership drive is underway. Help us help Mizzou Athletics.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Good news on Mizzou's highest-rated recruit

I covered the IMG/Cocoa game a few weeks back and DO was chomping at the bit to get back on the field. A bye week, then storm-based cancellation the next couple of weeks slowed his return from a minor injury thereafter. However, this morning he confirmed he would be back out there on Friday in what could be a shootout between IMG and Venice (Fla.) High.

"Hell yea," Olugbode told Rivals on his return to the lineup.

Rivals should be in attendance so we'll of course report back on the top 100 talent.

Story series idea

Hey guys, I'm coming up with some regular story concepts and wanted to gauge some interest in a current idea.

I would like doing a deep dive position group matchup preview series each week, maybe as three stories. An offensive backfields matchup, receivers vs. corners and offensive line/tight ends vs. defensive front seven.

Is that type of in-depth, weekly series something you would all be interested in? Do you like the idea to split it up into three shorter stories published over a couple of days or one very long story?

I'm heading out for a run and will see what the response looks like when I'm back. If you guys are into it, I'll get started tonight. If you like the shorter story split version of it, I'll try to have the first one ready to publish for tomorrow morning.

Thanks.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING The latest from Matt Zollers...

The Missouri QB commit told me he has two main targets that he's going hard after in 2025 and 2026 - four-star OT Andrew Babalola and five-star OL Jackson Cantwell.

I was a little surprised on Babalola since he's been mentioned more with Michigan and Stanford but he continues pushing back a commitment date so the Tigers are still a contender there. Cantwell is very high on Missouri, Nebraska and mainly Georgia in the SEC. Zollers is doing his best with both of those guys now.

FOOTBALL Courtney Crutchfield continues growing pipeline from Pine Bluff

I talked with Courtney Crutchfield at the All-American Bowl in January, and although he's unlikely to contribute much to the offense the remainder of the season, he's still the next Pine Bluff product on the cusp of becoming a regular contributor.
