BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Just want to make sure you all see that Drew King is spending a couple days in Springfield for us covering the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions. It's probably the biggest high school basketball tournament in the country and there are multiple players Mizzou is recruiting in action. Rather than rewrite everything he's already written, here are links from yesterday:

FOOTBALL RECRUITING

The first transfer portal window closes on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see who still enters from Missouri and who else might go in across the country. Here is the complete list of Mizzou's activity so far. The Tigers have lost 15, gained five.

To be clear, the portal window closing just means players have to be IN the portal by then. They are still allowed to take visits and exit the portal by committing somewhere else in the next few months. We expect Mizzou to get at least a couple more in the coming days. This weekend is a transfer visit weekend. Here are the players we expect to be in town.

Joe Moore, DE, Arizona State -- A Cardinal Ritter product, Moore spent two years at Arizona State, then committed to Washington, then went back on the market and is expected in Columbia this weekend. We'd be surprised if he doesn't end up a Tiger. And, yes, he's the son of former Mizzou RB great Joe Moore.

Dannis Jackson, WR, Ole Miss -- A four-star in the class of 2020, Jackson had offers from all over the SEC out of high school. He played a little bit at Ole Miss, appearing in 16 games, catching 19 passes for 324 yards over his first three seasons. He didn't play this year, which means he would have two years remaining. We asked someone at Ole Miss about him and we're told "Nice kid, really fast, needed to fully buy in and didn't, never really got a fair shake." Sounds like a guy that's worth a flyer where maybe a new spot will help him get closer to realizing his potential.

Theo Wease, WR--Wease has already committed to Missouri, but hasn't taken an official visit. He'll be here this weekend, presumably to help recruit the other guys. He'll then stay in town and start class in the coming days.

Sidney Williams, S, Florida State--A three-star in the Class of 2020, Williams played in 21 games with 66 tackles, an interception and four passes defended over three years in Tallahassee. At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, he could be a candidate to provide some assistance to Daylan Carnell at the STAR position, but could also be a deep safety.

Those are the guys we expect to be in town. That is not necessarily a comprehensive list. There could be others. If we see news, we'll pass it on. We feel excellent about Mizzou's chances with Moore and pretty good with Jackson. Not as sure on Williams.

Stay tuned. And don't be the doofus that posts first.

NCAA making changes in the Transfer Portal rules & regulations...

While players going into the portal for the first time will still be able to get immediate eligibility at their next school, the NCAA is trying to stop players from entering the transfer portal multiple times.

What's new: The NCAA Division I Council approved legislation to limit waivers for second-time transfer players. Now, any undergraduates who transfer a second time, or any other time after that, must meet specific guidelines in order to be eligible for immediate playing time starting with the 2023-24 season or risk sitting out a year between transfers.

With exceptions: Under the new rule, players can still get immediate eligibility at their next school if they are transferring due to a physical injury or mental health concern.

Exigent circumstances: And the NCAA will also consider "exigent circumstances" like abuse or sexual assault, but will not consider academic or athletic reasons, like being unsatisfied with playing time on their team.

In recent years, the NCAA has granted waivers for immediate eligibility for football, basketball, and baseball transfers, but will now recommend against that for players who have transferred once during their college careers.

Why the change: The NCAA wants to rein in the number of players using the transfer portal, a figure that has exceeded 2,000 just in the first transfer window after the 2022 college football season. Of those, at least 120 are quarterbacks.

The rule in action: As an example, this new rule would have affected the career trajectory of quarterback JT Daniels. The former 5-star played at USC (2018-19) then at Georgia (2020-21) and then West Virginia (2022) before moving to Rice. Had this rule been in place, Daniels would have needed to graduate between each of his other two transfers or sit out and use up a year of eligibility.

Undergrads only: The new rule applies only to undergraduates and not graduates, who are still eligible to play immediately should they transfer.

FOOTBALL Way too early expectations for 2023

I think most here agree that next year is do or die for Drinkwitz, but the question is, how much is enough to qualify for "do" and avoid falling into the "die" category?

My expectations, regardless of what's been brought in, have always been 8 wins in year 4. However, the fact that the staff has been able to retain virtually every defensive player that had the possibility of leaving has raised my expectations to where 8 wins is now the absolute floor.

What are you all feeling is acceptable for 2023 for Drinkwitz to hop off any form of a hot seat?
