BASKETBALL So, we found out we aren’t ready for top 10 competition

Doesn’t mean the season is over. I never expected a W in this one anyway. 95-67 is the same thing as 95-94 would’ve been.

A roster constructed in ten weeks over a summer is 9-1 with the only L against the #6 team in the country. I’ll take that.

Look, if we’re able to spend any amount of time on the bubble in mid to late February, then this season was a wild success, whether we make the tournament or not.

It’s game number ten in year number one. Relax.

BASKETBALL POSTGAME THREAD: BORDER WAR

Talking to Bill Self first:

-"The crowd was very welcoming. But in all seriousness, you want to play in environments that care. Mizzou showed out today. I thought the crowd was really, really good."

-Self said they wanted to eliminate Kobe Brown from going right and limit D'Moi Hodge from catch-and-shoot 3s.

-Self is asked if he had any advice for Dennis Gates. Self said not really, Gates is a good coach and has already won 9 games. He said this game wasn't going to define either team.

Post Game Thoughts

Sitting in section 217 at the under 4 and the end of this game is already written. Before I say this I need to qualify that I am happy Gates is the coach and long term he is the right guys. But today was one of the worst coaching jobs I have ever watched. Every time a guy gets hot he takes them out but more on that.

Unfortunately these guys are exactly who I thought they were coming into the season and just looked good against terrible competition. There is a reason East couldn’t compete in D1 and had to go Juco., he just isn’t good. Gholston is a joke. There were stretches he just shot us out of the game. If you are going to have a guy play 1 on 5 it should be Mosley. The only decent stretches this team has are with Gholston sitting out. Here are the guys that can play P6 ball. Kobe, Hodge, Mosley, Honor, Shaw, Carter, and DeGray and Gomillion in short spells on defense. So Gates minutes and usage is just puzzling. How does he sit a 40/50/90 guy. How does he take Hodge and Honor out every time they get hot? I think he is need to give an answer of what is going on with Mosley. Gates will be fine long term as he is collecting talent and by next year we shouldn’t have the all horizon league team, but this was painful.

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS AT THE HALF: BORDER WAR

-Mizzou didn't force its first turnover until the 12:25 mark, which is suboptimal for a team that gets a lot of its points in transition. They had a pretty bad meltdown defensively during that stretch, letting the Jayhawks hit something like a dozen consecutive shots. I'm not sure what they were expecting, but it definitely seemed shell-shocked by Kansas' offense at the start.

-The Tigers did a much better job once they finally got a stop to end the run, but it coincided with Dennis Gates rolling out bigger lineups that featured three forwards (Kobe Brown, Aidan Shaw and Ronnie DeGray), rather than three point guards. But that completely stopped their momentum on offense. Despite the extra height, the team missed several looks at the basket from close range and a few free throws, too. When Dennis Gates used his second timeout at the 8:16 mark, Mizzou had gone without a basket for 4:22.

-Aidan Shaw made some absolutely humongous plays late in the half, swatting away one of Gradey Dick's shots and cramming down an alley-oop on the fast break a few possessions later. This game isn't too big for him -- he actually seems to be playing better the louder the crowd gets.

-The Tigers' assist-to-turnover ratio is 4-to-9, the worst its been all year. So its not too surprising this is the most they've trailed by at the half all year. The team isn't playing as unselfishly as it usually does.

-Mizzou has actually had, I think, its best half rebounding the ball. The Jayhawks have only scored two points off on 2nd chance opportunities. The Tigers have 11 offensive rebounds to their 4. That's an encouraging sign considering its been one of their biggest weaknesses so far this season.

Reactions: MU Rick and BPhilb

Hard day for the “this isn’t a Rivalry” anymore crowd…

Been a long time coming, but…it’s gotta be tough for you naysayers (both kU and MU) watching so many people interested in this event locally and nationally. Especially for it being a dead matchup that nobody should care about anymore. Have fun sitting at home wondering why this game is being played… I’m going to go have some fun and relieve some old memories!
