BASKETBALL RECRUITING Mizzou announces signing of Danny Stephens

PWO who @drewking0222 wrote about recently

The Missouri men’s basketball team added a fourth member of its highly-ranked Class of 2023 when Danny Stephens (Augusta, Ill.) signed to join the Tigers for the 2023-24 season, announced Thursday.

A preferred walk-on, Stephens rounds out a four-player class during the early-signing period for Mizzou, which places among the nation’s elite. The Tigers currently own the No. 21 Class of 2023 by 247Sports composite rankings – the top class for MU since finishing with the No. 4 group in 2017.

“Danny is a textbook example of a player that exhibits our eight core values at Mizzou,” said Whitten Family Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dennis Gates. “He is a winner on the court, in the classroom and in the community. He is a very skilled player for his size that can score in many ways and guard multiple positions. Our program is better by adding Danny. He has Mizzou in his heart and we love players that want to be here and be part of something special.”

Stephens led Southeastern High School to an Elite Eight appearance at the state championship as a junior. A first-team all-state selection by both the IBCA and media, Stephens averaged 28.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game with the Suns – shooting 63 percent from the field and 94 percent from the free-throw line. He was also named the 2022 Jim “Red” O’Flaherty Player of the Year as the outstanding boys player in his region.

“Danny is a great basketball player but an even better person,” said Southeastern head coach Brett Ufkes. “Even with all of his accolades, he remains humble and driven. I’m so excited as he starts the next chapter of his basketball career. His ability to score outside and inside gives him the versatility to compete within the SEC.”

A 6-foot-7 wing, Stephens also played for MidPro Academy where he earned second-team honors on the NY2LA Association U17 Team. He helped lead MidPro to titles of the TGPA and NY2LA Associations.

“Mizzou is getting a true grinder,” said MidPro Academy director Gavin Sullivan. “He has the toughness, size and skill to excel in different positions and is comfortable doing what is asked of him in order for the team to win. He will open a lot of eyes in the Mizzou fanbase.”

Stephens joins Jordan Butler, Trent Pierce and Anthony Robinson II in the Tigers’ No. 21 class. It marks the second-straight ranked class for Gates as Mizzou head coach as he inked the nation’s No. 2 transfer class during the spring of 2022.

Bowl Practices if Vegas Bowl

@GabeD I am curious how bowl practices will be structured if we end up in the Vegas bowl. A significant benefit of a bowl game is the extra practice sessions. After doing some reading, I found out the 15 practice limit is actually a myth. However, I would expect the team to want to use as many practices as they can. And typically they will not practice during finals week. Since bowls aren’t announced until 12/4, I’m curious the plan.

I understand why Vegas is appealing for fan draw, but it seems less beneficial for the team.

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS ON MIZZOU'S 105-69 WIN OVER HOUSTON CHRISTIAN

-This felt more like a Harlem Globetrotters event than a Division I basketball game. And while these games have certainly helped the team, it's impossible to say that we've learned how good or how bad the team is going to be against SEC competition. KenPom had Mizzou at No. 41 in the country in its preseason rankings. Heading into today's game, after six consecutive wins, the Tigers have moved all the way to ... No. 43. A blowout win over a bottom-30 team isn't going to move the needle much, either. The next five games are going to be much more telling.

-Mizzou gets a lot of credit for pushing the pace and scoring in transition, but I think the team's transition defense is underrated. They didn't give up on plays and they didn't get beat down the floor. Houston Christian had a whole two points off of fast breaks.

-The team reached 20 assists again. The craziest part of the stat to me is that it's not one or two players handing them out -- it's the entire team. Seven different players had at least two dimes against HCU. Guys aren't afraid to give the ball up because they know it'll eventually come back to them. I recall ESPN's Zach Lowe quoting Quin Snyder a few years back saying something to the effect of "Our team (the Utah Jazz, at the time) plays harder on defense when everyone touches the ball on offense." That's likely the case for Mizzou, too.

-This is the sixth time in seven games Missouri has scored at least 40 points in the paint. It's not a huge surprise considering HCU was giving up the highest percentage of 2-pointers in the coutnry. But I would anticipate future opponents playing a lot of zone against the Tigers.

-DeAndre Gholston is the fifth different leading scorer for the Tigers this season. It goes back to what Dennis Gates said: You don't know who the team's best player is going to be night-to-night. That makes them tough to scout.

FOOTBALL DRINK'S POSTGAME PRESSER AFTER 29-27 WIN OVER ARKANSAS

Drink said Brady and Dominic Lovett really stood out and that the run defense played great. He thanks the fans and said it's great for the Tigers to re-claim the Battle Line trophy.

He said it was good to win this game, especially for WR Barrett Banister who is from Fayetteville, Arkansas. He dressed but didn't play.

He said they wanted to win the game and that's why they made the decision to pass on 3rd and 4. Miller took Banister's spot on that play. Drink said he doesn't know if he does that play in week 2 or three with Cook but they did it today.

He said Cook has played great football the last 10 quarters or so. He said his rushing ability really separates him.

He said he thinks Bush did a great job setting some of these plays up.

He said the defense had confidence going into halftime despite giving up 21 points. They were stuffing the run, but just had to finish get those plays where KJ would make something out of nothing under control.

Drink said this is the most complete game of the season.

He said the momentum is great for the program.

Drink doesn't feel bad for going for that 2 point conversion early in the third.

Drink said Isaiah McGuire is a force up front. He said McGuire is dealing with an AC separation and is still ballin (I'm paraphrasing).

Drink said Martez's passion, energy and grit is what college football is all about. He said Daylan Carnell is a big-time player and made a big play in a big game.

He said they were more aggressive in the pass game and that's because he knew they were ranked 119th in pass defense.

Drink says if Mizzou goes to Vegas Bowl he will buy media cigars (its a joke).

He said KJ Jefferson is a special young man, a good player and that he has a bright future.

Drink thinks Mookie Cooper made plays tonight and said he's proud of him.

Loud noises

Is there any way to get the AD to turn off the speakers in Faurot? Last night was a great environment but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t somewhat spoiled by incessant music and yelling from cut-rate end zone speakers.

Today I’ve noticed Ohio State and Clemson let their fans and bands do the talking. Feels like addition by subtraction

Schedule next year

South Dakota W
MTSU W
Kansas State - swing game
Memphis in St. Louis - W
at Vandy W
LSU - swing game
at Kentucky - swing game
South Carolina - W
at Georgia - L
Tennessee - likely L
Florida - swing game
at Arkansas - swing game

So probably 5-2 plus 5 swing games.

If we can go 3-2 in the swing games we could go 8-4, which would be solid progress. That probably gets us something like the Gator Bowl or Outback Bowl.

This year we basically had 7 swing games and we went 3-4 in them.

K-State L
Auburn L
Florida L
Vandy W
South Carolina W
Kentucky L
Arkansas W

FOOTBALL Has Bush Hamdan Done Enough?

I would think the close relationship between the two would give him the edge at OC. Also, we've seen dramatic improvement in the offense since he's been the primary play caller. Will it be enough?

I know he had a mixed success at best as OC in Washington, but maybe he'll be ready given a second chance. My guess is that Drinkwitz would want him, but can he sell it to the Curators and the AD?

BASKETBALL QUICK THOUGHTS ON MIZZOU VS. HOUSTON CHRISTIAN AT THE HALF

-I think this is the best Mizzou has looked chemistry-wise all season. There's still some missteps -- times where somebody picks up the ball too early and tries to force a bounce pass that gets picked off. But they had a good feel of sensing where their teammates would be without looking, knowing where the ball was supposed to go without looking. This team is well-connected.

-I thought it was interesting that Ronnie DeGray came off the bench before Aidan Shaw. DeGray made the most of his minutes, excelling on the defensive end. It makes sense for Dennis Gates to have an extra forward he can trust, especially for when Kobe Brown or Noah Carter get into foul trouble. DeGray might be working his way into that role.

-The defense as a whole was ridiculously good through the first seven minutes of the game. Mizzou held HCU to 0-6 from the floor, building up a 25-3 lead. The Tigers went on to play ridiculously bad defense immediately afterward, with the Huskies hitting seven consecutive field goals. Some of it had to do with the lineup on the floor -- Kobe got into foul trouble and had to sit. But inconsistency on the defensive end has been a pattern for this squad.

-DeAndre Gholston is having his best game of the year, which is a promising sign considering how he's struggled to find his rhythm lately. While Gholston might not be a lethal shooter, he's elite finding ways to drive to the rim. When Missouri was having a hard time against MVSU's zone, Gholston and Isiaih Mosley were the only players able to get dribble penetration. When things got bogged down today, Gholston got the team back on track.

Is there a worse feeling in sports than hating your own quarterback?

I was a kid, 5th grade maybe for the Denkinger thing... I was a freshman in hs for the 5th down play... I was a freshman in college for the Nebraska kicked ball... and those all sucked... But Jesus Christ, it hurts my soul every week that we keep running this kid out there to play QB.

Do we REALLY not have anybody better? Hell, we just ran Macon out there to FAKE snapping the ball... Couldn't he run the ACTUAL QB sneak better than that?

We have all these good receivers but we're scared to try to throw it to em bc we don't know for sure Cook knows what to do with the ball... It's driving me insane... PLEASE ELI, PLAY SOMEBODY ELSE!
